DR. WON KYUM KIM Dr. Won Kyum Kim died in Winnipeg on Saturday, July 4, 2015. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Dr. Yoon Tuk Kim; his son Emanuel Jae Yung Kim; his son Dr. Godfrey Jae Hyun Kim, his wife Godric Latimer-Kim and grandchildren Astrid Hee Jin Kim and Barrett Hyun Jin Kim, and his daughter Dr. Jane Jin Hee Kim-Heavey, her husband, Jerry Heavey and grandson Jackson Patrick Heavey. Dr. Kim was born on May 7, 1929 in Ham Heung, Korea. He completed doctoral studies at Seoul National University and the University of North Carolina. He was married to Yoon in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on June 19, 1959. He immigrated to Canada in 1961, becoming a proud Canadian citizen in 1970. Dr. Kim was a dedicated, internationally renowned research scientist for over 40 years specializing in molecular biology and plant genetics. Dr. Kim lived in Winnipeg for 50 years and worked tirelessly on behalf of the Korean community. He founded the Korean Association of Manitoba and the Korean Heritage Language School. He received many prestigious recognitions including being named an Exemplary Canadian Senior by the Federal Government of Canada in 2010, and was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for service to his country. Dr. Kim was also a proud member of the Korean Veterans Association. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. A reception will follow.
