EDWARD SCARTH Edward Scarth passed away peacefully at the age of 89, on July 7, 2015 at Concordia Hospital. He is lovingly remembered by his children Barbara (Giuliano), Douglas (Betty), Gwen (Bruno), Gordon (Sue), his sisters Beatrice Parkin (Reg) and Dorothy Nielsen (Erik), sister-in-law Rose, and his grandchildren Fiona, Graham, Laura, Angela and Megan. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma (née Legge), his brothers Donald (Mary), John Rowland "Rolly" (Elsie), Dick (Kay), Herb, Arthur, and his sister, Violet Glendinning (Jack). Ted was born in Winnipeg on September 23, 1925. He was the seventh of nine children born to Cuthbert Morson Fenwick Scarth and Wilhelmina Scarth (née Gabel). He graduated from high school and immediately was hired by Dominion Bridge, where he worked for 42 years until his retirement. At Dominion Bridge, he worked as a draftsman, estimator, surveyor and troubleshooter. One of the many projects he worked on was the building of the hydroelectric dam at Grand Rapids, where he worked onsite to guide the erection of part of the dam, some of which he designed. While at Dominion Bridge, he met Norma. They married in 1955 and had four children: Babs, Doug, Gwen and Gord. Ted was an outdoor enthusiast and a real family man. His family was his life. As a young man, he loved to spend time with his brothers: camping, fishing and hunting. Once his sons were old enough, he took them hunting as well. Ted and Norma took their children with them on all of their camping trips and outings. Ted would often come up with new places to take the kids that they had never been before. Ted also enjoyed fishing in his boat, and his favourite spot was the Big Whiteshell Lake, and later, Lee River. He took his kids out fishing to teach them to fish; again, always thinking of family. Ted had an impressive collection of tools, which he enjoyed using for home repairs, car repairs and woodworking projects. There was almost nothing that he could not fix, or build himself, and when it was safe, often with his kids at his side. Ted always loved getting together with his brothers and sisters and their families for celebrations, especially Christmas. Often, at Christmas time, all his brothers and sisters and their families (almost 100 people) would meet at a hall. Oldest brother Don would round up the young kids to sing Jingle Bells or Santa may not find the party. Who had more fun, the kids or the parents watching the kids? When the grandchildren were born, Grandpa got a whole slew of toys to entertain them! Dad looked after our mother for 11 years (after her stroke when she could no longer walk.) When she was in the hospital or nursing home, he went to visit her EVERY DAY. Ted lived in East Kildonan for 56 years. For the last few years, he has lived in the Seine River Seniors Residence on Ste. Anne's Road. We thank Dr. P. Malek-Marzban, his cardiologist, for the special care that he provided our father. Also, thanks to the Concordia Hospital staff for their kindness and the good care they gave our dad, and to the staff at the Seine River Residence for their kindness and helpfulness. A service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. I knew little about Mr. Scarth, yet he always intrigued me in some way that I'm not sure I even really understand myself. I think it's because of the obvious love he had for people (particularly family), and at the end of the day, that's all that really matters. I wish I had made a point of visiting him and getting to know him more, rather than just when I was doing yard work for him. I think we would have hit it off and made good friends. I should have taken the chance, I wish I did. I think I would have learned a lot about life, and never regretted it for a second. The only regret now, is that I never reached out anymore than I did. Rest in peace Mr. Scarth, I hope you are happy, out of pain, and with your wife. Best of wishes to his family. - Posted by: Tyler Hodge (Neighbour) on: Jul 12, 2015
