He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Nettie (Spurling) Labun; his children, Inonge, Paul and Michael; as well as nine grandchildren, Jessica, Makaria, Nikolas, Malakia, Mikayla, Joseph, Sarah, Samuel and Sophia. Albert grew up on the farm in southern Manitoba where he learned the value of teamwork and stewardship of the land. His formal education began in a one-room school house, after which he attended Winkler Collegiate. In 1960, he obtained a B.A. and B.Ed from the University of Manitoba. Albert's teaching career began at the high school in Portage La Prairie. He later held teaching positions in Zambia, Stoke-on-Trent and Transcona. In Zambia he met Nettie Spurling, a teacher from England. They married in 1965 and moved to Winnipeg, settling in the Wolseley neighbourhood where they raised three children. From 1976 to 1979, the family lived in England and Albert studied the use of drama in education, obtaining a post-graduate diploma in education at Newcastle University, and an M.A. from Durham University. In 1985, Albert became General Director of Manitoba Pioneer Camp where he served until 2003. For many years, Albert was a member of Fort Garry Mennonite Brethren Church where he developed many close friendships. In the 2000s, he began attending the Grain of Wheat Church Community. Albert is greatly missed by his family and friends but his love for others will continue to serve as an inspiration. The family would like to thank the staff at the Health Sciences Centre and CancerCare for their kindness. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m., at Fort Garry Mennonite Brethren Church, 1771 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, Manitoba. I first met Albert at the U of M in the local VCF chapter, where he was president and led well. Years later we were members of the same church, where it always was a highlight when he was the Scripture reader because he made the text come alive. - Posted by: Travis and Lois Reimer (Friends) on: Jul 16, 2015

It has been a long time since I've seen Albert, but I always enjoyed working both for and with Albert at MPC. He had a wonderful gentle presence as leader and was always encouraging of all. Love to all his family, Andrea "Costner" Carlson - Posted by: Andrea Carlson (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2015

It's hard not to think of Al when thinking of MPC, or vice versa. He was such an influence on so many of us over the years. Something I've been hearing from many people over the last week. A gentle giant and a man of God. He will be so sadly missed. And many thoughts and prayers are with all of you, not only from me but from the MPC community. Though not in body (I wish I could be), I will be there in spirit on Friday. Much love and a big hug. - Posted by: Jillian Thompson (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2015

Our lives intersected with Albert and then later with Albert and Nettie and then their children at various times and places over many years. Albert was always gracious and kind. His inquiring mind and love of life was contagious and inspiring! Our sincere sympathy and wishes for peace go to Nettie and family! May you feel His love and care! - Posted by: Don and Gloria Dyck (Friend) on: Jul 15, 2015
