SHIRLEY ANN JOHANNSON (nee MAW) February 28, 1931 - July 21, 2015 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Johannson (nee Maw), wife, mother, grandmother, and soon-to-be great-grandmother. After a short, but brave struggle Shirley passed away at the Grace hospital on July 21, 2015. Shirley was predeceased by her husband of almost 50 years Albert Johannson in 2002. She was also predeceased by her mother Emma, father Bud, her brother Cecil, sister-in-law Nell, nephew Cecil, and in-laws Mary and Bill Johannson. Mom will be so dearly missed by her daughters: Lory (George) Hucul, Cheryl (Mike) Mainman, Connie (Barry) Lutz; and son Kevan (Alice) Johannson. She will also be dearly missed by grandchildren: Corrie (Jeff), Jody (Mike), Ashley, Jordy, Morgan, Taylor and Katelyn. Mom is also survived by nieces Sandra and Cindy; nephew Jeff; and sister-in-law Ilene. Shirley was born in Winnipeg and lived her entire life calling Winnipeg home. She attended Gordon Bell High School where she met her lifelong sweetheart Albert (she always called him Jo) and they married in 1952. Four children later, Shirley had her hands full and dedicated her whole self to her family. Summers were spent at the cottage in Winnipeg Beach spending time with family and friends. Shirley was an amazing cook. Whether it was meals at the cottage or special events throughout the year, Mom prepared meals you would actually get excited for. As the kids began to grow their wings, Shirley and Albert discovered their paradise in Hawaii. Many "great times with great friends" is what she recalled as her time drew near. Hawaii was her happy place, "paradise on earth" she would say. After Albert's passing, Shirley moved out of the large family home in the West End, and into a seniors' apartment in St. James. Shirley thrived with her new challenges and adapted very well. Playing bridge with the ladies or taking the shuttle to Safeway, she always enjoyed her independence. She may have even strolled across the lot to the Anavets on occasion to try her luck with the VLTs. Mom had such a presence about her, gentle and strong in such a unique way. She had her hands full in life and did an amazing job. Her children will forever be in her debt. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital for taking such good care of our mother these past few months. A special thank you to Maria and Nancy for the extra care they provided. A private family service will be held at a later date. The family graciously declines flowers, if you wish, a donation can be made to a charity of your choice. Gone But Not Forgotten We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore; We did our best to the end, til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away; And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay. You left behind some aching hearts, That loved you most sincere; We never shall and never will Forget you Mother dear. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Lory, Cheryl, Connie, & Kevan, We are so very deeply sorry to hear about your mom. With our mom & dad (Sammie & Ron) being only children, Shirley and Jo were like aunt & uncle to the Bowery kids. There are so many wonderful memories of visits to your cottage and your home, and spending time with all of you. Shirley & Sammie and Jo & Ron, lifelong friends with so many (crazy, hilarious) stories dating back to their teens... and I'm sure we only heard a fraction of those stories (the Sammie & Jo battles were epic)! I remember the day mom passed and how brokenhearted your mom was, saying "they've all left me, I'm all alone".... so while our hearts are full and many tears have fallen, I also have a smile on my face because I know the four of them are back together again, laughing, loving, & fighting and getting into all sorts of trouble. Heartfelt condolences and much love to you all... Rick, Heather, and Tracey - Posted by: Heather Nicholson (Bowery Family) (Friends) on: Aug 05, 2015
