WILLIAM (CHUMMY) ZACHARIAS It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Chummy, on July 28, 2015, at the Lakeshore General Hospital, with family by his side. Chum was predeceased by his beloved wife Joan in 1994, his parents Julius and Emilie, his son-in-law David McDougall in 2012, and all of his siblings. He is survived by his children Gail (Phil) Piper, Judy McDougall, Jo-Ann (Jerry) Landry, Barry (Carol) Zacharias and Ingrid Zacharias. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Curtis (Megan) Piper, Mitch (Jacqueline) Piper, Ryan McDougall, Scott (Erin) McDougall, Leanne Landry, Kyle Landry, Dawn Zacharias, Shannon (Danny) Ruzicka, Erica (Ian) Terris, Troy (Catherine) Fontaine, Dylan Fontaine, Storm Fontaine and 16 great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law George Menard, Gordon (Mary) Busch, and Linda Ficek as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dad was born November 15, 1925 in Camper, Manitoba. He grew up on the family farm with his parents and eight siblings. He married our mom Joan in 1947 and celebrated almost 47 years of marriage before her passing. He took over the family farm as a young man, worked at several jobs until he was hired by the Department of Highways where he worked for 20 plus years. Although he enjoyed working in town, farming was always his first love. Dad worked hard but always had time to joke and make us laugh. He was a man of integrity, always willing to help others. After he retired, Chum enjoyed puttering around the farm, fishing, golfing, gardening, feeding the birds and the deer and visiting with family and friends. In 2012, he sold the farm and moved to Ashern. The family would like to thank Dr. M. Emadi, Dr. W. Roets, and all the staff at Lakeshore General Hospital for the kindness and care shown our father. We would also like to thank Dr. P. Cho and Dr. R. Koul of CancerCare. A special thank you to Helen Webster, Cassandra, Victoria and all of the other IRHA workers. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 in the Camper Community Hall with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Interment to follow in the Dog Lake Cemetery with a lunch to be held in the Camper Hall. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren Curtis Piper, Mitch Piper, Scott McDougall, Kyle Landry, Dawn Zacharias and Troy Fontaine. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Dyck, John Moman, Ted Cook and Larry Russell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lakeshore General Hospital Guild, Palliative Care Unit, c/o Julie Bergner, P.O. Box 721, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We met Chum and Joan at the farm many years ago while visiting Jo-Ann and Gerald and family from Ontario. Our last two memories were meeting Chum, Gail and Phil at the Casino buffet. He was always so kind and gentle. Chum's smile said it all. Our condolences to the entire family and all his friends. - Posted by: Maurice and Judy Landry (sister-in-law of Jo-Ann (Gerald)) on: Aug 06, 2015

  • Condolences to the Zacharias extended family. Uncle Chum was a very special Uncle to all of us - always approached life with a smile and a chuckle. He was a caring, gentle man. The word(s) 'wha-cha-ma-call-it' will never be spoken nor heard without fond memories of the man who I'm sure coined the phrase! We will miss him. - Posted by: Linda and Al Hoover (Niece and her husband) on: Aug 03, 2015
