DR. DAVID MCQUEEN Dr. David McQueen passed away peacefully on August 4, 2015 at the age of 93. David spent his childhood in Glasgow, Scotland. He served in the British Army in India during the Second World War where he met Beryl, his wife of almost 70 years. Together they emigrated to Canada and eventually settled in Winnipeg, where he practiced for many years as a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon. After leaving private practice, he worked as a consultant Surgeon for the Worker's Compensation Board and then finished his career as the Medical Examiner for the Interlake area. He enjoyed many hobbies over the years, including movie making, sailing, golfing and painting. To all of his interests, he brought the same dedication and perfectionism that he maintained in his professional life and he never lost his deep Scottish roots. He was predeceased by his wife Beryl on December 24, 2014. He is survived by daughter Janet (Terry), son Ross (Michaeleen), daughter Caron (Howard) as well as eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A very special thank you to all the staff at Red River Place in Selkirk. Your patience and support were deeply appreciated. A private family gathering has been held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family would gratefully request that donations be made in Dr. McQueen's memory to Red River Place, Selkirk, Manitoba. Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I worked with Davd McQueen at Winnipeg Childrens Hosp in 1972. I had so much respect for this wonderful surgeon He had a look at my back and said there was trouble there, he was the first one to diagnose problems in my back. To his family, your Dad and Grandfaher a wonderful man. - Posted by: Donna Stefanson (OR nurse Childrens Hosp Winnipeg) on: Aug 05, 2024

  • I met this wonderful doctor when I was 13. I required treatment for scoliosis and I was reduced to tears when he explained very matter of factly what was required. At that time he terrified me but I came to realize how lucky I was to have him as my doctor. After many body casts he fused 2/3 of my spine when I was 14. I continued to wear body casts for a year and four months and because of his strive for perfection, I never had a sore on my body from the casts. I am now 72 and still live an active life thanks to Dr McQueen. He said I would be bent over looking at my feet with a hump on my back without the surgery. I am sorry this tribute is so late but I was thinking of him and just saw his obituary. I feel blessed he was my doctor! - Posted by: Shirley Hartwick (Former patient ) on: Apr 24, 2021

  • Dr. McQueen saved me from pain and surgery. I had about a dozen body casts from age 12 to 16 for my scoliosis. Every time I went for a new one he was funny, even flirtatious, and always asked about my music. He was a true friend while I was going through a nightmare. I think of him often and am glad he had such a long, rich life. - Posted by: nerissa cohen (scoliosis patient) on: Mar 23, 2016

  • To the McQueen children...I remember your parents fondly ...as I remember the 3 of you. Your Belmont babysitter Deanna - Posted by: Deanna Burton (Dyck) (babysitter to Janet, Ross and Caron) on: Aug 13, 2015

  • My name is Lyall McQueen (no relation). I first met Dr. McQueen in July, 1959, when I was 14 years old and had been in Children's Hospital for 2 weeks where they were attempting to correct my curvature. I had been "stretched" several times and a body cast applied. The curvature was increasing. Dr. McQueen arrived on the scene fresh from returning from California after learning the new Reesor method where the spine is fused. The operation was successful and 56 years later, no problem. I moved to Moose Jaw, SK some 30 years ago just after the good "Doc" retired from practise. A few years ago, I received a phone call on New Years Day from David wishing me a Happy New Year. This continued for 2 or 3 years. In October, 2013, I was visiting Winnipeg and contacted David. He invited me to his house in Stonewall for a visit. We had a wonderful afternoon of visiting and reminiscing. He was an exceptional man and a real asset to mankind. I feel honoured to have known him. He made a difference to my life. - Posted by: Lyall McQueen (patient) on: Aug 11, 2015

  • I was 9 years old with scoliosis when I first met Dr. McQueen in the mid 1960s. One of if not the only orthopedic surgeon in Manitoba at the time who was placing children in body casts to correct the curve and then perform a spinal fusion a number of years later. Dr. McQueen saved me from having a steel rod placed in my spine for life which was the standard procedure at the time. A no nonsense guy who was frightening to a 9 year-old but also very kind. I'm now 56 years old, not bent over, no rod in my spine, no back pain and have and continue to lead a very active life. It was my great fortune that my parents had the foresight to realize that Dr. McQueen was the right choice. My gratitude to Dr. M is never ending..... - Posted by: Craig Thullner (patient & friend) on: Aug 09, 2015

  • I met Dr. McQueen 50 years ago when I was 12 years old. Dr. McQueen gave me my life. His determination, skill, compassion and humour not only mended my body but helped me develop as an individual. My children were told Dr. McQueen stories and although he never knew it he was a part of my everyday life. How lucky I was to be one of the many people who's lives he touched. My most sincere sympathy to your family in the loss of your Father and my most sincere appreciation to your family for sharing your Father all these years to those of us who needed him in the medical way. - Posted by: Patricia Pistun Callaghan (former child patient) on: Aug 09, 2015

  • I was 12 years old when Dr McQueen started treating me for a double curvature scoliosis. After 8 plaster body casts I underwent surgery and had 8 vertebrae fused at age 16. Had I not had the surgery I would have been confined to a wheelchair at age 25. I am now 60 years old and have enjoyed perfect posture ever since. Dr McQueen was an amazing talented surgeon whom I am forever grateful to. - Posted by: Dianne Boyce (Patient) on: Aug 09, 2015

  • As a young competitive sailor David became a friend and mentor. I will never forget seeing him sitting in the cockpit of "Eclipse" in Gimli harbour and his voice booming across the water as he encouraged the returning dinghy fleet. His annual keelboat event in which he ensured young sailors had an opportunity to drive "big boats" had such a powerful effect on many young sailors. Always strong, positive and supportive, David, thank you so much...... - Posted by: Warren Mills (Sailor) on: Aug 09, 2015

  • I was 13 (57 years ago) when I was referred to Dr. McQ for non-stop back pain. Mine was a difficult case so he consulted with colleagues and I ended up stuck in Children's Hospital for two weeks. I was a symphony season ticket holder and what was for me a highlight of the season was fast approaching. I told the Doc and he arranged for one of his residents and his girlfriend, also WSO subscribers, to pick me up at the hospital, take me to the concert and drop me back at the hospital. How many physicians would do that for a patient, a kid to boot? He was a wonderful doctor and a kind, caring person who would obviously go the extra mile. I loved him dearly, like a favourite uncle. In the years since, I have thought of him often as the arthritis diagnosed at 13 has progressed. I extend to his family and friends my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of a wonderful human being. - Posted by: Gord Richardson (Former childhood patient) on: Aug 09, 2015
