ERIC BARTZ March 9, 1943 - August 8, 2015 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Eric at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg on August 8, 2015. Eric had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only this May, and he faced his illness with quiet dignity and courage. Left to mourn his passing and lovingly cherish his memory are his wife Gisela (to whom he was married for 47 years); daughter Michele (David Duncan); son Jeff (Marta Krygier); grandsons Izaak, Kaan, and C.J.; great-grandson Nathaniel, sister Lilli (Siegfried Ritz); brother-in-law Richard Wiese and sister-in-law Trudy Wiese; brother-in-law Bernd; sister-in-law Cindy, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Eric was born in Poland in 1943 and lived in Germany as a child before immigrating to Canada in 1952, finally settling in Winnipeg. Eric attended the University of Manitoba, graduating from the first class of Physical Education in 1967. Throughout his studies, Eric was a sports star competing in basketball, volleyball, football, track, and soccer, winning multiple trophies and awards along the way. Upon graduating with his second degree in Education, Eric began his employment with the Winnipeg School Division No. 1, teaching at Tec Voc, Churchill, Grant Park, and Sargent Park schools. He volunteered much of his time coaching junior high basketball and volleyball. Upon his retirement in 2003, he continued to work as a substitute teacher for eight years. Eric was a member of Immanuel Pentecostal Church, and was involved in the church community for many years. He loved spending his free time at his cottage on Lake of the Woods, which he built himself. There he shared many adventures and weekend expeditions with his friends and family leaving behind unique and cherished memories. We will miss his quick wit and mischievous sense of humour. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff of Riverview Health Centre palliative ward for the care provided to Eric during his last weeks. A private family interment service will occur prior to a memorial service open to friends and family at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Immanuel Pentecostal Church, 955 Wilkes Ave. Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Home of the Good Shepherd orphanage in Brazil. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • Mr Bartz had a big effect on me when I was at Churchill. I could tell he was an amazing athlete but he was incredibly modest. This was something I greatly admired and a characteristic that was dear to my heart. I left Winnipeg shortly after graduating from High School and have lived in Calgary ever since. I wish I would have verbalized to Mr. Bartz how much I looked up to him and what a big influence he had been to me. Hard thing to do when you are young I guess. I think that Mr. Bartz and I had an understanding that went beyond words and he knew what a big role he played at that time in my life. He was an amazing person and a fantastic teacher! I am sorry for so much time to have passed without knowing of his passing. I was very blessed to have had Mr. Bartz in my young life in Junior/Senior high school. Sign me a grateful athlete and student, Bill Durnin - Posted by: Bill Durnin (Student at Churchill High School) on: Oct 09, 2021

HE EXUDED A GREAT SENSE OF CONFIDENCE AND CALMNESS THAT I FOUND ENCOURAGING. PEACE BE WITH YOU ALL. - Posted by: Bonnie Clement (CO-WORKER) on: Aug 31, 2015

  • Gisela and family, We are so sorry for your loss. I remember well the effort Eric made to come by and shake our hands after a service. He was good natured and kind to us. May God continue to give you comfort. Erhard & Beverley - Posted by: Beverley Buss (Acquaintance) on: Aug 17, 2015

  • Went to High School with Eric at both Tec Voc and Daniel Mac. He was a great athlete, a great student and a wonderful person. Our heartfelt condolences and well wishes go out to his family and friends at this most difficult of times. - Posted by: Jerry and Barbara (Koltok) Finlayson (High School Classmate) on: Aug 15, 2015

  • Gisele and family- My thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with you. Eric was truly a scholar and a gentleman who set and kept the bar high. - Posted by: Walter Lukie- Sargent (Friend) on: Aug 14, 2015

  • Mr. Bartz was a good teacher who brought a unique sense of humour to the classroom and the gym. I remember one gym class Mr. Bartz was instructing the class on how to perform the high, long and triple jumps. I decided that I wasn't going to take the triple jump seriously and what followed was 3 consecutive failed attempts. Mr. Bartz could have done what a lot of teachers would have done and allow me to fail. He did not. He brought me to the side door of the gym and explained to me that I was a good athlete but that I was wasting my potential. He said a few more words and asked why I had not tried and then promptly demanded that I run a lap around the schoolyard (which is quite a long distance I may add). As I ran, his words began to sink in. I came back inside from the run and finished 2nd in triple jump. I learned something that day, and it was all because he took the time to care that a student should try to do their best. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: S. • In the early 1960's, I attended an evening meeting at Daniel McIntyre school - I had some time prior to the meeting ,so I went to the gym. A player was practicing basketball(after the regular practice)- it was Eric. This desire to be better was a trademark for Eric. As the years progressed Eric continued this desire for self- improvement in his teaching and daily life. Approximately 30 years ago Eric & Gisela moved into a house across the street from us- they were wonderful neighbours & friends. Whenever Bev & I were in a " pinch" we could depend on Eric & Gisela. They also had two wonderful " kids" in Michelle & Jeff. They all made our society a better society. Bev & I convey our deepest sympathy to Gisela,Michelle , Jeff & the entire family(ies). Neighbours & friends- Bev & Art Bryant. - Posted by: Eric. Bartz (neighbour& friend) on: Aug 12, 2015

  • Eric will always be fondly remembered as a true gentleman. He was generous with his time; kind, respectful and an excellent role model as an athlete, coach, teacher, and family man. I truly enjoyed my time working side by side with Eric at Sargent Park. I will always treasure the memories we made as co-workers; sharing our family stories, our athletic achievements, our philosophies of teaching and a lot of laughs over the years. From our many conversations over the years, it was clear to me how very proud he was of his children, how much he loved and cherished all his family members, how he enjoyed his cabin and how much he treasured time with friends. Eric you will be missed but will remain in our hearts as we remember the wonderful memories we have from our times together. - Posted by: Rowena Nash (Co- worker at Sargent Park School.
