JOHN NELSON CHARLES CAMPBELL My husband and best friend died peacefully August 12, 2015 at Grace Hospital following a terminal struggle with COPD. John's family and friends will remember him best for his big heart and love of laughter. John loved people and it showed. He could light up a room with a twinkle in his eye and have everyone convulsed with laughter with his quick wit and incredible stock of jokes. John was a unique, larger-than-life, kind-hearted man who wore his heart on his sleeve and gave generously of himself to causes he believed in. John was born in Winnipeg July 23, 1935, the eldest of six children born to Charlie and Anne Campbell. He and his sisters Lorraine and Linda grew up in the North End until Charlie returned from overseas. The family then moved to East Kildonan where Margaret, Bruce and Colin joined the family. John graduated from East Kildonan Collegiate and attended United College for a few years where he joined the University Naval Training Division (UNTD), Kappa Sigma Kappa Fraternity, played bridge, and made many life-long friends. Sports were a life-long interest for John. He played goal in hockey and lacrosse throughout his teens and was inducted into the Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a member of the 1954 Manitoba Junior All-Star Team. He was a devoted fan of the Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Jets, and Toronto Blue Jays. John's love of music and dancing began at an early age and he shared it willingly with family and friends. He was a driving force behind the Bronx Park Jive Hive, a weekly teen dance party, where he was a sought-after dance partner - man, could he jive! John leaves a legacy of love and humour. He demonstrated love and enduring support to Marlene, the mother of his children, and to Gordon, Glenn, Kathryn and Karen and their respective families. He enjoyed a successful career in general insurance and estate planning. John's proudest accomplishment was graduating with a law degree from the University of Manitoba at the age of 50. John and I shared an incredible journey for over 32 years. We loved and cherished each other and laughed every day. John was actively involved in Freemasonry for over 50 years. He was Past Master of Three Pillars Lodge, Past DDGM of Unity District, member of the Board of General Purposes of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba, Past Most Wise Sovereign in Scottish Rite, and Past President of the Ritualistic Unit, Khartum Shriners. John was a member of Keystone and Empire Lodges and an associate member of the Khartum Pipes and Drums. A special thank you goes out to the medical teams of ICU and 3 North at Grace General Hospital for the compassion and care shown to John, Jeannine and the family during his five week stay. A celebration of John's life will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 28, 2015. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg MB R3A 1P6. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • My condolences on behalf of the Konar family go out to Johns wife, Jeannine and to the Campbell siblings including their mother, Marlene and the extended grandchildren. I first met John back in the late 1970s as a friend of his oldest son, Gordon while attending UBC. As a fellow rookie football player on the 1978 UBC Thunderbird championship football team, Gordon and I became friends for life that year and through that long relationship, I became friends with his Dad. I have many, many fond memories of John from that first year together-his laughter, his jokes, his twinkle in his eye and his massive love he had for his family. John was an enduring presence for his children and he will be missed. I will always treasure that cold beer we shared together after another football game victory as an eighteen year old sitting at at the Fraser Arms Pub with Gordon, John and our fellow UBC teammates. Hearing Johns stories and being with him was an education on its own! John was very much part of the UBC team fabric that year and I hope he continues to follow his favourite sports teams from those ṕearly gates of heaven. We loved you, buddy and we will continue to love your family. We will never forget your smile and gracious presence. Bye for now, old friend. - Posted by: Brian Konar (Friend of the family) on: Sep 30, 2015

  • Jeannine, It is with great sadness that we saw that John had passed away. He truly was larger than life and we always enjoyed seeing him in the office, as his wit and humour were always entertaining. His passing will leave a large void for many people and organizations.
