JAMES THOMAS HICKLING March 17, 1929 - August 12, 2015 Jim Hickling passed away peacefully in his sleep after a short battle with cancer at the age of 86. James T. Hickling, fondly known as Jim, was born on the family farm in Carrick Township Ontario. He was the eldest son of James Brocklebank Hickling and Janet Laura Hickling (Hutton), older brother to twins Keith Hickling (Carol) and Don Hickling (Mary). Jim stayed with the family dairy farm until call of the West enticed Jim to the prairies of Western Canada, where he eventually joined the RCMP. His early police postings took him to Herschel Island Yukon and British Columbia, where he met his wife Norma "Sammi", where they commenced a journey of 59 years together. Proud father of Keith (Sam), Kevin (Joanne), and Lori (Greg) and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. During Jim's 36 year dedicated service with the RCMP, he was posted to Herschel Island, Prince Rupert, BC, Sydney, N.S. and back to the Yukon and numerous detachments in the Northwest Territories (NWT). He transferred to "D" Division Manitoba in 1977, eventually retiring in 1986. After a few weeks of retirement, Jim went North again employed as a seasonal game warden for the Department of Renewable Resources GNWT, where Jim and Sammi spent seven wonderful and adventurous summers at a remote wildlife check station in the Mackenzie Mountains. The Canol Road, guides, Outfitters, pilots, horse wranglers, Dena Hunters, grizzly bears and faithful dogs are now forever etched in family memories. During Jim's retirement years at Winnipeg, he enjoyed taking his two granddaughters, Alissa and Dana, to many Moose hockey games and his football team the Blue Bombers. Jim enjoyed his team mates at the Charleswood curling club, curling with them until knees and hips forced him to the sidelines. Both Jim and Sammi were active members with the RCMP Veteran's Association and members of the Charleswood Royal Canadian Legion. Memorial services for Jim will be held at the Charleswood United Church on August 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. The family thanks the staff for the excellent care and kindness given to Jim during his short stay at the Riverview Health Centre.
