LINDA JANE SHWALUK (SNIDER) It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Linda Jane Shwaluk (nee Snider) on August 22, 2015 at her residence in Pine Falls, Manitoba. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. She was born on October 15, 1944 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and moved to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1950. She graduated from high school at Portage Collegiate Institute and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1965 and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Manitoba in 1967. While teaching high school at Arthur Meighen in Portage la Prairie, Linda met the love of her life Jack Shwaluk. They married on July 5, 1969 and eventually moved to Virden, Manitoba where Linda and Jack owned and operated the Country Side Inn motel. While living in Virden, they were blessed with a son, John Lindan Shwaluk, in 1978. Linda put her career on hold after moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba in order to focus all her attention on being a loving and supportive mother to John. The family moved to Pine Falls, Manitoba in 1990 where Linda resumed her career as a teacher-librarian at Sagkeeng High School. Upon concluding her career, Linda was able to enjoy a long and relaxing retirement. She is survived by her loving husband Jack; son John (Tricia); mother Elsie Snider; sister Judith O'Shaughnessy; brothers-in-law Ernie and Len Shwaluk; sister-in-law Eileen (Tony) Hunt and numerous nephews, nieces and great-nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her paternal and maternal grandparents, her father Gordon Snider, in-laws Kathleen and Michael Shwaluk, sisters-in-law Lisa and Eleanor Shwaluk, and brother-in-law Lawrence Shwaluk. Linda was highly respected by everyone she befriended. She was a dedicated housewife, exceptionally well read, extremely knowledgeable in a huge array of topics, a sincere and loyal friend, a great mother and a loving and devoted wife. She touched countless lives as a dedicated teacher, and her love of her family and generosity will live on in our hearts forever. Donations in her memory to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation in lieu of flowers would be appreciated. Condolences may be sent to the family c/o Omega Funeral Home, 83 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, R1N 1T8, 1-800-303-4621 or friends may leave a message of sympathy on our web site www.omegafuneralhome.com "Dedicated to those we serve".

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Linda was my history teacher for two years, the first year as Miss Snider and the second as Mrs. Shwaluk. I admired her for her knowledge, her style and her ability to raise an eyebrow and make a cutting remark. Most memorably, she accompanied a group of grade 12 students to see the play "The Assassination of Jean Paul Marat" at MTC. The content was not what she had expected for her students! I have thought about and laughed about that evening for 45 years! She was an excellent teacher and I learned a lot from her. - Posted by: Lana McGimpsey (former student) on: Sep 05, 2015

  • I was a student in the 1970's and had immense respect for Linda and especially enjoyed when she would immerse us in current world events studies. She was one of my favorite teachers and I feel fortunate to have been a student. - Posted by: Adriana O'Neil (Former student) on: Aug 27, 2015

  • Gary and I both felt privileged to have known Linda even though it was such a short time. Her sudden passing came as a big shock to us. The bringing together of our families by the marriage of John and Tricia is truly wonderful and we were looking forward to becoming grandparents together. We will feel this missed opportunity for a long time. Our hearts go out to Jack, John and Tricia. - Posted by: Dianne & Gary Schmidt (Parents of Tricia, John's wife) on: Aug 27, 2015

  • My condolences to Jack and John. Unlike many kids, I loved history, and very much appreciated Linda,s knowledge of and interest in her subject. I felt she was somewhat of a mentor to me, and was so sorry to read of her premature passing. - Posted by: Valerie Gilroy (Former Student (home room and history) Family Friend Delta Neighbour) on: Aug 26, 2015

  • My wife and I met Linda and Jack in Palm Springs Ca. After playing some golf with Jack he invited myself and wife with our other friends to come over to there place in Palm Springs to have a few drinks and just talk, we had never met Linda before but got along like we were old friends right away. While Jack showed us around the area the girls got to know each other, when we got back Jack cooked some treats on the BQ and we all had a good time talking about where we lived and our lives and families. I could tell right away that Jack care for Linda was very strong. Stay strong my golfing buddy! - Posted by: Tom Dmohoski (Friend) on: Aug 26, 2015
