MADELINE KATHALEEN DAWSON 1927 - 2015 After a year long battle with cancer, Mom finally passed peacefully on September 6, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by husband Earl in 1987, grandson Peter, son-in-law Glenn and daughter-in-law Judy. Madeline is survived by her five children, Bill (Brigitte), Pat (Cora), Nancy Bollenback, Don (Katerina) and Randy; six grandchildren, Errin and Steven Bollenback, Riley and Danielle Dawson, Alexandria and Anthony Dawson and the last of her seven brothers and sisters, Marie Wilkinson. Born in Brandon in 1927, Mom's dad died when she was 10, so the destitute family moved to live with cousin Jim on Talbot Avenue in Winnipeg. After high school, she took a job as a secretary with the Canadian Grain Exchange, where she met Dad and they were married in 1949. In 1953, Mom and Dad moved to Rivers, MB to operate Dawson Dry Cleaners with dad's brother Ken. Mom was able to be a stay at home mom for all the years in Rivers and often spoke fondly of those years. She was heavily involved with Catholic Women's league and the 4H sewing club in Rivers. A new career for Dad brought them to Winnipeg, Ottawa and back to Winnipeg, but unfortunately Dad died at only 61. Mom missed him dearly but was able to create a life for herself with bowling, cruises, casino bus trips and bingo. She loved Christmas baking at Bill's farm, trips to Calgary to visit Pat and Cora, trips to the cottage with Nancy, family dinners at Don and Katerina's, casino nights with Randy, and the tile rummy battles at Bill and Brigitte's. She was still driving her car and bowling at 86 with an average of 155. Her competitive nature had her always looking forward to bridge and cribbage with her friends at Oakland Gardens and then at The Westhaven, where together with Errin, Steven and Brigitte, she became "The Bingo Queen". And she loved to do her daily puzzle and cryptogram right until a few weeks before she died. Funeral mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, (Munroe Avenue at Brazier) on Friday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. (lunch to follow), the same church where she and Dad were married, and where she attended mass and bingo regularly until she couldn't anymore.
