Condolences & Memories (22 entries)

  • Dan was my teacher in numerous classes and baseball coach at Laura Secord Elementary. I moved to Alberta in 1975 and made it back to visit him the following year. He was an incredible influence in my life and I have thought of him over the years. I have just learned of his passing and felt it important to leave this message. To this day, I still have a note he wrote me for my performance on the baseball team. I am certain he is sorrily missed. - Posted by: Chris Fileccia (Student) on: Apr 20, 2017

  • Mr. Filipowich was my gym teacher over 35 years ago at Laura Secord Elementary School. I just heard of his passing and had to leave my condolences. He was one of the few teachers that I remember from my early school years. I wish peace and comfort for his family. - Posted by: Rosemarie Gauthier (student) on: Apr 13, 2017

  • Mr. Filipowich was the kind of teacher you always thought about over the years. I had him as a teacher at Laura Secord probably about almost thirty years ago. Everyone loved him, and later on throughout life his name was always brought up by everyone who had him as their favourite teacher. I'm so saddened to hear that he has passed away way too young. My heart goes out to his family and friends. RIP Mr. Filipowich - you will always be remembered. - Posted by: Sheryl Gudmundson (Student ) on: Feb 04, 2016

  • A very gentle gentleman. - Posted by: Lynne Wakshinski (friend, co-worker) on: Sep 21, 2015

  • Betty; Derek (Cheryl); Kim (Mike); Matthew and family. It was an honour teaching with Dan as a grade 7 St. John’s High School team member. On many an occasion his quiet demeanor was a settling influence for our entire grade 7 team. We knew we could turn to Daniel when things got out of hand and a settling steady voice was needed! He was appreciated greatly for this ability. Respected by students and staff alike Daniel will be remembered by many. After his retirement he became our number one sub not only for me but also for all of our grade 7 teams and others in our school. He was our "go to sub," because of his calmness, competence, and general broad knowledge in all subjects. We knew that however we communicated our request for his services “that he understood it immediately” the first time around. He never faltered giving teachers and students alike a quality teaching learning environment that was appreciated by all. He was one of a kind in many ways. He was kind, considerate of others, unselfish and mostly “a true professional!” We will miss him dearly. • Very saddened by your passing, although I never had you as a direct teacher as i was in the french program we still got to know each other fairly well during my 4 years at Stanley Knowles. My first memory of you was my very first time walking into Stanley with my mom and sister, we had just registered for school after moving here from Regina, I walked up to you and asked "are these lockers for us or staff?" You said with out missing a beat and with out asking what grade i was in, "You bet they are for you guys, you will get the locker combinations tomorrow". Tomorrow came and no combination, so than two days pass and i see you again and I asked how come we did not get a locker? You said you should have, lockers are for people in grade 7 and 8, I replied with oh that's why I am only in grade 5. Your shock was priceless, I guess Sisler will have to wait a few more years to get you on the football team. Even though i never ended up at Sisler in the end i went to Tec. RIP Mr. FILIPOWICH. You were a great man. - Posted by: Jeff Hunt (Student) on: Sep 17, 2015
