ELIZABETH BRAUN It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our mother Elizabeth Braun in the early morning of September 12, 2015, at the age of 91, at the Concordia Place Personal Care Home. Elizabeth will be lovingly remembered by her family. She is survived by her children, Irene (Robert) Holgate and Sieg (Lynne), grandchildren, Lisa, Dielle and Eric, great-grandchildren, James and Anthony, stepbrother Willy Warkentin, and half-brother Edward Warkentin, also many nieces and nephews in Germany. She was predeceased by her parents Nikolai and Katherina (Dyck) Warkentin, husband Peter Braun, and brother Jakob Dyck Elizabeth was born on September 27, 1923 in the village of Hamberg, South Ukraine. Her father, who was Burgermeister (Mayor) of their village, was taken to Siberia because of his unbiased devotion to the villagers. At the early age of 16, Elizabeth quit school to help with farm chores. Her mother (Katherina), remarried Johan Warkentin who had two sons. Soon after her half-brother Edward was born. Unfortunately, her stepfather was also taken to Siberia a few years later. When the war broke out, Elizabeth, her mother and brothers fled the Ukraine, destined for Canada, which proved to be a very difficult journey. Elizabeth, with her family, immigrated to Canada in July, 1948. In 1949 she met her future husband Peter, whom she married in 1950. Coincidentally, Peter also came from a village in South Ukraine. Together, working very hard, they created a wonderful home in North Kildonan for their children and grandchildren, teaching them values, morals and strong work ethics. Elizabeth and family enjoyed many summers at their Brereton Lake cottage. Special thanks to all the staff at Concordia Place for their care, kindness, compassion and support. A private family interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elizabeth's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
