CORNELIUS LEONARDUS SCHENKEVELD Peacefully, surrounded by his devoted family, Cornie passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 81 years. Cornie is survived by his loving wife Joy; children, Perry (Susan), Nancy, Sharon Forzley (Sean); darling granddaughters, Kimberly Guidry (Nick), Erica, Carrie, and Chelsea Wharton; sisters, Plony (Casey), Toos (John), Mieke; sister-in-law Ann; stepchildren Cynthia Wharton (Jade), Mitch Funk (Evelyn), and Aaron Funk; many nieces and nephews; special nieces goddaughter Joy and Amy; and sister-in-law Nellie. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Betsie in 2003; parents, Christine and Leo; brothers, Martin (Louise), Frank, and his sister Mary (Sam). On April 11, 1934 Cornie was born in the Netherlands, immigrating to Manitoba in 1952 with his entire family. He and Betsie married in 1959, raising their children in Winnipeg. They spent many happy family holidays and weekends travelling and camping in Manitoba, Ontario and in the States. In retirement, Cornie and Betsie moved to Paradise Village where they spent 12 happy years. Cornie spent much time in their garden and in his garage doing his beloved woodworking. After Betsie passed away, he moved to Winnipeg in 2004. Cornie was a journeyman electrician, who worked up north on the DEW-Line, in Lynn Lake and Gillam and various other northern communities, as well as in the USA. He was general foreman for many projects throughout Manitoba and Winnipeg, including the Grace Hospital, Kildonan Place and St. Vital Centre. In 2005, Cornie met and married Joy Funk and they were blessed with 10 happy years together. They travelled to his hometown of Den Hoorn, Delft in 2006 and 2007, where he re-connected with relatives and his very special childhood friend, Hans. Despite failing health, Cornie loved to spend his time with family and friends at holiday and birthday celebrations. He was full of fun, loved to tease and play jokes, and kept his sense of humour until the very end. Funeral Liturgy will be Celebrated on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 820 Cottonwood Rd. with Rev. Phil Daley presiding. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I only learned today of Cornie's passing (Jan. 22, 2016) while browsing my Electrical Worker's Journal. Cornie was my journeyman on the Symington Yards CNR job, and the Diefenbunker Shelter in Camp Shilo. He looked after me, and kept me out of trouble with our General Foreman, Ludwig Fricke. To this day, I still use the green wooden tool carry-all that he lent me for a few days. It has the initials "CS" burned into the handle. We had lots of on the job laughs. I think of him once in a while with a smile. RIP Brother. See you one day. Barry. - Posted by: Barry Durie (Cornie's friend and apprentice in early 1960's) on: Jan 22, 2016

  • R.I.P uncle cor. You will be missed. - Posted by: Ryan schenkeveld (Great uncle) on: Dec 06, 2015

  • Just learned about Cornie's passing today (Nov.12,15) We go way back to 1952 when we met in Arnaud, Manitoba. As teenagers we worked together for the CPR, in the busch near Dryden, and in Morrisburg, Ontario. We kept in touch long distance occasionally and visited a few times since in Winnipeg. Rest in peace, my friend. - Posted by: John Brugmans, Brockville, Ontario (Good friend) on: Nov 12, 2015

  • My deepest sympathy to the Schenkeveld's Family. As you know I knew him since 1954, also lived in Paradise Village and was in contact with Connie and Betsy. May he rest in peace. Nelly Spapens - Posted by: Nelly Spapens (Schenkeveld's Famly friend) on: Sep 26, 2015

  • I met Mr. Schenkeveld when I was in the faculty of education. Nancy and I became friends and through the years we got to know each other's families. Nancy and her dad had a great relationship, He took great pride in his home and passed that onto his children. He was ready, willing and able to help Nacy with repairs and maintenance of her home. I know the Schenkevelds are a close and loving family and his suffering was felt by all. We are all relieved that he is in peace, but his passing has left a hole in the hearts of those who loved him. My prayers are with you. Kelly torgerson - Posted by: Kelly Torgerson (Friend of family) on: Sep 25, 2015

  • Dear Grandpa Cornie, We are so sad that you are gone, but we take comfort in knowing you are no longer suffering and are finally reunited with Grandma Betsie. We have a big hole in our hearts that will never be filled. You were an amazing grandfather, and I will never forget all of the amazing memories that we shared together over the years. This isn't goodbye, only see you later. Love, Kim and Nick - Posted by: Kimberly Guidry (nee Schenkeveld) (Granddaughter) on: Sep 25, 2015

  • Corny lived in Agape Villa where my Mother lives We would meet Joy and Corny in the hallways and visit and soon became friends. Tom looked forward to Corny coming down to coffee in the mornings and they soon developed and friendship. Corny was alway cheerful and never complained, even when you knew he didn't feel well. He was a joy to be around and will truly be missed. - Posted by: Tom & Hazel Booth (Friend) on: Sep 25, 2015
