JOHN GARY BEAN February 11, 1955 - September 23, 2015 It is with sadness and mixed emotions that we announce the unexpected passing of our brother. Gary was the first born of five children to Pat and Al Bean. Predeceased by his mother and father he will be missed by his sisters Mary Ellen White (Gary), Barb Lysack (Walt), Trish Cantafio (Rob, son Liam), his brother Bob Bean (Laura, children Connor and Haley), his best friend Toby, cousins, numerous close friends and neighbours. Gary attended St. John Brebeuf School from 1961 to 1969 and St. Paul's High School from 1969 to 1973. Gary's career started with a paper route in River Heights where his meager earnings were used to purchase a Hummel figurine for his mom. Gary moved on to more lucrative work as a Motor Vehicle Inspector with the Department of Highways and MPIC. Gary's employment career with Canada Post as a driver spanned 29 years from 1986 to 2015. Gary enjoyed many trips to Jasper, various parts of Mexico and camping and fishing in Manitoba and Ontario. Gary enjoyed bowling, playing hockey, and golfing with his parents at Crescent Drive. He was a strong supporter of the Winnipeg Jets where he was a season ticket holder for many years. Gary not only inherited his small stature from his father, but more importantly his kind and gentle nature. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. "How Goes It" was his common greeting when asking how you were. Material possessions were not important to Gary. A pair of worn out jeans, a t-shirt, a cold beer and Toby by his side was his definition of a wealthy man. A boat and motor with a fishing rod in hand was even better. Gary loved the outdoors and fishing at Lang's Loon Cottage in Vermilion Bay. Gary was never a cook, but knowing a good burger he did, which was made by his good friends and neighbours Arlene and Bill. Gary was not a man that could do anything fast. He talked about doing things for a long time before getting them done, or not. We're unsure if this was his way of torturing his siblings. His home was his castle and that was where he was most content, especially after his heart attack. Gary miraculously survived a cardiac arrest a year ago. Gary's life was spared by a guardian angel named Marlee who performed CPR while at the Fort Garry Hotel. After a month in ICU at St. Boniface Hospital and many months at Riverview Health Centre, he walked out an independent man. We will forever be grateful for the additional time Marlee gave to Gary to spend with those that understood and loved him most, his brother and sisters. Thank you most recently to the staff at Grace Hospital and also to the many doctors and nurses at St. Boniface Hospital and Riverview Health Centre. We would also like to acknowledge Adrienne and the staff at the Fort Garry Hotel for their support and compassion. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Interment to immediately follow. Donations can be made in Gary's memory to D'Arcy's Animal Rescue Centre, 730 Century St., Winnipeg, MB R3H 0M1. Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • Very sorry to hear of Gary's passing and while spending four formative years with him in our teens we had only bumped into each other occasionally over the years but always with joy. My condolences to both family and friends and I will be pleased to donate to Darcy's Animal rescue in his memory - this apparently yet another interest that we shared. Gary was one of a kind and my thoughts and prayers are with you on losing him. - Posted by: John Kiernan (High School) on: Oct 17, 2015

  • I will really miss Gary. I am the eldest of the cousins on the maternal side and he was the next eldest. I have memories of many large family gatherings and pictures of Gary, Mary Ellen, and Shaune when we were toddlers. Although I moved away in 1980 I often saw him when I visited and in recent years phoned him. I am glad that I saw him at Riverview in Sept 2014 when he was doing well and almost fully-recovered. He had a warm and caring nature and good sense of humour. He always made me feel like he was so glad to see me and that the years apart made no difference. He loved his dog dearly and when I got a dog in the last few years we shared our love of our "best friends." I am sad that Gary died so young and will miss a lot in the family. - Posted by: Joanne Keelan (cousin) on: Oct 10, 2015

  • I met Gary through my husband Kerry Davies, over 25 years ago. Although I have not seen Gary in years, he still holds a special place in my heart. No one has ever made me laugh harder than Gary. He always had the ability to make any event memorable, and everyone feel a part of the group! Gary was one of the most genuine people I ever met, with an extremely large heart. It is a great loss! My thoughts and prayers are with his family. - Posted by: Darcy Davies (friend) on: Oct 10, 2015

  • Some of my earliest memories are of hanging out with cousin Gary. He was a gentle guy, and like the obit said, never had a bad word about anyone. Although we mostly lost touch when I moved away, he was in my heart. Cheers to you my friend. - Posted by: mike keelan (friend and relative) on: Oct 09, 2015

  • We had the pleasure of hearing "Honey, I'm home!" Everytime he arrived at our depot! We will also miss his humour and interesting conversations. Rest in peace Gary. - Posted by: Lana Vitt (Co-worker) on: Oct 08, 2015

  • Gary was one of the most well-liked classmates you could imagine. He was quiet (unless he was hooting), he was sincere, fun and funny. He was a true character. He may be Team Canada's greatest fan! I watched the 1972 Canada Russia game in class with Gary. It didn't take much, for many years to come, for Gary, out of the blue, to raise his fist proudly into the air and yell 'Go Team Canada' any occasion, any season, and when you least expected. He was a character, and even though I saw him only twice since High School, I will miss him, so I can only imagine how hard this must be for the family. Until we meet again "Go Team Canada". - Posted by: Mike Scatliff (Friend at St. Paul's High School) on: Oct 07, 2015

  • I have had the pleasure of working with Gary and had many conversations over the years. He had a great laugh and sense of humour. As a driver many years ago we had the pleaseure of listening to all his animal calls on the radio...always made us laugh. RIP Gary. Another angel in heaven. - Posted by: Deborah Crawford (Co-worker) on: Oct 07, 2015

  • I grew up living behind the Bean clan who lived on Renfrew street. Gary and I were the same age and hung out together. I will never forget the ball hockey games we used to play on cold winter days in front of his house for literally hours....the best of times. He was always a friend and fun to hang out with a a good person. I am very sorry by his passing and my condolences to his family. - Posted by: Norman Yusim (Old friend) on: Oct 03, 2015
