JAMIE LEE PREFONTAINE
Born: Jun 29, 1985
Date of Passing: Sep 22, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMIE LEE PREFONTAINE June 29, 1985 - September 22, 2015 With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Jamie Lee Prefontaine (Brooklyn) at the age of 30. He was predeceased by his father Darryl Meilleur and his daughter Tavia Lynn. Jamie is survived by his four children Keyauna, Daxon, Gracelynn, and Jyrie; his mother Loretta and stepfather Dwight Flamand; brothers Rickey (Jessica) and Mark (Mellisa); and sister Jessica (Jeremy). He is also survived by nephews Cylus, Matthew, Aiden, and Xavier; niece Malerie; grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins; numerous friends and devoted fans. Born and raised in the Brooklands area, he grew up having many adventures. Jamie achieved in everything he did, even at a young age, from having championships in baseball, playing hockey, and enjoyed many other sports. He also loved camping, fishing and hunting. He said these were his best moments in life, being outdoors, hanging with friends and family. As he reached his teen years he began to listen to rap and hiphop music. Tupac was his idol. He started writing and singing songs and then eventually started mixing his own music. We knew then that this was his passion. He started making music with his friends; they called themselves "Westbrook Records", and made their first CD. In 2007 he joined Heatbag records where he released numerous CD's and began performing on stages in local bars. In the next few years Jamie (Brooklyn), Jon-C and Fettah formed a group called "Winnipeg's Most". Hours in the studio finally paid off as they won many awards and were featured in McLean's Magazine, in documentaries, had many media interviews and formed a huge fan base. Jamie (Brooklyn) loved fans and no matter what, he would always have the time to talk, take pictures and show them love. He collaborated with many artists through his career and formed friendships that he always respected and cherished. Recently, he started a new record label called YSMG (young successful music group) where again he had success. No matter what Jamie's journey was in the music scene he always made it succeed, music was his greatest passion. Jamie also attended numerous fundraisers, if anyone needed him he was there especially for his Aboriginal family. He took pride in being Métis, respected and used his success to make others aware of missing and murdered women. He held this issue close to his heart and helped two families purchase headstones for their loved ones. The greatest accomplishment in life wasn't the music, travelling, etc., it was being a father. He cherished his children so much and was always there for them. He never let his children do without and gave his heart to them. They were his life and always will be. They all love and miss their Dadda greatly. He also loved his Mama, and she was his rock. He knew she would say it to him straight. No matter what the situation his mother was always there for him. Their love was so strong, nothing could break that bond. Jamie gave so much of himself to others that he forgot to give back to himself. We all feel a huge loss, but we know his battles can no longer hurt him; his soul is free and at peace. We love you Jamie (Brooklyn). Funeral service will be held at the Calvary Temple, 440 Hargrave St. on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: AFM, 3rd Floor, 1031 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3G 0R8 or the Drag the Red, donations through its GoFundMe page. I have been thinking a lot lately on the lives we led and the losses we have suffered. The only way to soothe this pain will be when we meet again in Heaven and be together again forever as a family, until then I will see you when I go to Church to pray. I know that you are there in God's house making beautiful music in the choir with all the Angels. Your talent is not forgotten and your gifts are still desired here on earth. You are incredible now as ever and I cannot wait to laugh with you again. You have inspired love that is forever growing greater stronger and more beautiful. Thank you, I will be seeing you. - Posted by: Angel Burnside (Friend) on: Sep 13, 2022

Brooklyn, I remember when I first heard your music, it was the peg jam and always be our homeland jam. I remember seeing you twice, once was at the red River Exhibition and I noticed you walking by and I ran up to u and without hesitation you took the time to take a picture with me. The second was at my work (I work at the hospital) but I didn’t approach you because it would have been unprofessional of me to ask for another picture. The day I heard of your passing I looked at that picture and thought “wow such a young Metis man gone too soon”. I listen to your music today and I’ll forever keep playing your music in remembrance of you! Winnipeg Forever and Brooklyn forever. May you rest beautifully up there. - Posted by: Tiff (Fan ) on: Oct 24, 2021

I'm embarrassed to say that I just started listening to Broklyne's music about a month ago, fell upon by accident actually but felt in love with his style. Was looking for new releases and that is when I found the news of his tragic loss with his demons BUT it made me reach out to an old friend today just to ask her - HEY, HOW ARE DOING? - NOT TOO GOOD, was her answer. So two hours later and many tears and laughs about old times she THANKED ME for such a simple phone call because when she had answered the phone she was contemplating suicide, I had NO IDEA. So we talk EVERY DAY even if only for a minute but that IS ONLY BECAUSE OF BROKLYNE'S STORY.. I WISH I COULD THANK HIM BUT I HOPE HE HEARS ME EVERY NIGHT WHEN I LOOK UP AND. THANK HIM. MY SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS. HE TOUCHED 2 LIVES IN THIS PAST MONTH AND IT IS THE YEAR 2020 NOW. BLESS YOU ALL. - Posted by: Sandy (A musical fan) on: Dec 01, 2020

Back in I believe 2011 I was in Winnipeg for my Grandmother's funeral. I was in Polo Park Mall with my future Cousin in-law. We were up in the food court having lunch and I just happened to look up as I saw Brooklyn walk by with Jon-C. I smiled and said hi to Brooklyn, he smiled and nodded. That brief acknowledgment spoke leaps and bounds. My Cousin in-law who is from Scotland was like, "Who's that?" I explained who Jamie was and who his group is. So I lost computer access for a while and when I finally heard that he passed, I felt like a part of me died also. R.I.P. Jamie - Posted by: Mike (Fan) on: Nov 18, 2016

I still cry to this day, I'm so deeply saddened by your passing. You had such a genuine heart and your drive, talents, dedication and determination was an inspiration to not only myself, but to many. I will forever cherish the time we had together, and to the day we meet again.. Rest easy. I miss you, and I appreciate all the positive words you instilled in me. You were right all along. You were able to see things for what they really were, and you were able to see in me, everything that I truly am. I am honoured to call you my friend, and I will always be blessed to have had the opportunity of having you in my life. May the hurt and pain you felt be set free, your soul be at peace. Heaven has you, a real angel now. - Posted by: Britney (Friend) on: Sep 10, 2016

Brooklyn has had a major impact in my life. I am from Thunder Bay and have been listening to his music for many years now. His music was so relatable and real. I will truly miss his unique style and voice. Hip-hop will not be quite the same without him. My condolences to his family, I hope you are able to take pride in all he accomplished throughout his musical career. My favorite song is Runaway which seems to be even sadder now that Brook is gone. Our deepest sympathies go out to Jamie's entire family. You left way too early and although we were from different generations we came from the same place. You set a standard for music in our city and I truly thank you for that. Like the lyrics below (2pac) your voice will be apart of history so whenever those that miss you need you all they have to do is press play. Rest in peace Jamie. "Dear momma don't cry, your baby boy's doin good Tell the homies I'm in heaven and they ain't got hoods Seen a show with Marvin Gaye last night, it had me shook Drippin peppermint Schnapps, with Jackie Wilson, and Sam Cooke Then some lady named Billie Holiday Sang sittin there kickin it with Malcolm, 'til the day came Little LaTasha sho' grown Tell the lady in the liquorstore that she's forgiven, so come home Maybe in time you'll understand only God can save us When Miles Davis cuttin lose with the band Just think of all the people that you knew in the past that passed on, they in heaven, found peace at last Picture a place that they exist, together There has to be a place better than this, in heaven So right before I sleep, dear God, what I'm askin Remember this face, save me a place, in thug's mansion" - Posted by: Ryan Carlson (Old friend) on: Oct 02, 2015

You and my boy friend at the time (pat mcgimpsey(pt bab)) had gone to school together and been friends for years....hung out made music together etc that's how I was introduced to you. I attended many shows and community events held such as the block parties or the community clean up held at ralph brown school with my daughter. One moment that sticks out in my mind and will always for ever was the way you always helped people....I remember a grown man pulling and grabbing on a boy no older than 8 years old yelling at him and making gestures as if he was about to strike the young boy and you just weren't having it.....you sure taught him a thing or two. I found it odd because there were so many other adults around and no one did a thing to stop the man, but not you...you weren't having it, I will never forget the look on the boys face....how happy he was to have someone there who cared and defended him. There is a few more occasions but I won't go in depth to that. I know you will be watching over your babies and mama very closely, they are lucky to have such a guardian angel. I am still puzzled but have some understanding to how such a great man with such a huge heart with so many people was going through what you were going through, I wish something anything could have changed the events off the day you left all of us :'(:'( I hope you rest easy my old friend and no matter what negative things have happened in the past you are free from that now. I Hope the negativity is drawn away from the situation at hand and something positive comes of it....it seems impossible but god always has a plan. * huggz to your parents, children and family. see you Saturday for the last time until my day comes as well....I still am in disbelief :'( r.I.p Jamie ♡♡♡♡ - Posted by: desiree (old friend ) on: Oct 01, 2015

I have been a fan of music all of my life, mostly Rap. They say it's a black dominated industry, but when you were popping up on your earliest tracks I could tell there was a new powerful voice and writing talent that was going to stand out as a real artist, and to top it off you are Native as am I. Jamie you and me go way back. You had to have been about 11 years old. We met in Ness school. I knew you before you were Brooklyn. Alot of "fans" tend to forget that you are more then just an artist you were an individual who touched many lives. You were respected by alot of people. I don't wish this upon anyone. You were so young with so much life a head of you. I think of your family, the kids involved and your mom. No parent should have to say goodbye to their child, no parent should have to bury their child. I send my condolences to all those this has effected. Even though I haven't seen you in 10+ years you will always remain a friend. Fly high with the eagles and always watch over your family. Until we meet again xxx - Posted by: shandra (friend ) on: Sep 28, 2015

Where do I even start my brother, I see why u were tuff on me when we were younger, trying to prepare me for this twisted world we live in. As I stated in another post that I made without you I'd be just a nobody.I love you more than you will ever know. You were just a go getter that put a little too much on ur plate at once. I know it was a spur of the moment decision so don't let your soul wander in the after life. Fly my brother. Fly free pand I all see u again..Got ur fams when and were I can. You were everything I could have ever asked for a brother. You made me so proud and always seemed to impress me over n over. My heart burns for you. You were and still always will be a legend. I could go on forever on this. I will come see u and talk twice a day as usual. Love you always and forever. - Posted by: Rickey Flamand (Brother) on: Sep 28, 2015

You have touched the lives of soooo many. My deepest condolences to your mother, wife and children. God needed an angel and that what he took you for. Hey have strength. Jamie is a great soul, the world and Winnipeg transit couldn't contain his words, his way of literature was solely unique to what his experiences were, his family, his friends, and his thoughts. Met him and had interactions in the past with his group members as well as him. Much love and support for those who are closest to him. He was a gift, his talent can't be replicated. To the family and friends of Brooklyn aka Jamie Prefontaine, I sincerely am very sorry for your loss. I met Brooklyn in Toronto 2 years ago at the Indiginous Festival. I had the honor of shaking his hand and having a conversation with him on a personal level. I listen to his music every single day and this news has broken me as a fan. With love and compassion I hope Jamie can now rest in paradise, free of pain and anguish. From Niagara Region, Ontario I salute Brooklyn on his next journey :'( :'( - Posted by: Frank Jolivet (Fan) on: Sep 26, 2015
