Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLYLA SIGURLIN THORARINSON June 9, 1942 - September 23, 2015 It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, Amma, aunt and friend, Lyla Thorarinson, aged 73. After a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma, Mom died peacefully with family at her side. Mom is dearly missed by husband Brian, having just celebrated 52 years of marriage on September 21. She is mourned by son Rob and family Lana, Sarah and Jenna; daughter Leanne and family Jeff, Andrew, Ryan, Jessica, Jasmine and Josh; as well as many extended family and friends. Born to Asa and Kjartan Eggertson at Hecla Island on Lake Winnipeg in 1942, Mom came from a humble and loving family. The traditions and connections to her Icelandic heritage remained a source of great pride to her throughout her life. She and Dad were married in 1963 and moved to Winnipeg where they soon started a family and began building a wonderful life together. In their early years Mom stayed home to raise her kids and later partnered with Dad in the many moves to newly constructed homes and additional home building projects. Throughout her life, Mom's priority was always her family. She was never happier than when we were all together with extended family in Riverton or Hecla Island and exploring the natural beauty of Lake Winnipeg on the family houseboat. In later years she and Dad began travelling to Arizona in order to escape the winter. Once they were officially retired, Mom loved to spend winter months at their home in Arizona. Mom was always fiercely proud of her family and of her Icelandic heritage. It was fun to tease her on this topic because she was forever seeking an Icelandic connection. Whenever she met new people she would proudly declare that she was from Hecla Island. Mom loved music and song. She especially loved to harmonize with her sister Irene. She loved animals having grown up on Hecla with horses and cows as family pets. Mom had a wonderful ability to connect deeply with people. She was open and caring and greeted everyone with her beautiful smile. She established long and meaningful relationships that were so important to her throughout her life. Those that brought so much joy to her life include her friends in the Assiniboine Park "Walk and Talk Brigade", her Mesa, Arizona friends and neighbours and the many close friends and families from Hecla Island who were a constant in her life since her childhood. We acknowledge the special place that her friend Jan Restall held in her life. Jan, Mom cherished your friendship and support. Mom received her diagnosis of cancer in 2000. She proudly survived the initial treatments and then enjoyed many great years. Mom did not let cancer define her, in spite of her challenges she lived her life to the fullest. She was proud to be one of the longest surviving multiple myeloma patients. Mom was always so thankful for the excellent care that she has received during her challenging illness. She would want us to thank her caregivers Dr. James Johnston, the late Dr. Adi, Dr. Emily Rimmer and the entire support team at CancerCare. Special thanks to family friend Dr. Mike Johnson as well as her GP Dr. Elizabeth Giesbrecht. A celebration of Lyla's life will be held on Friday, October 9, 1:00 p.m. at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. (near Red River College). Mom, we will all miss you..."goda nott elska min" ...till we meet again... love your family. If you so wish, donations may be made in Lyla's memory at cancercarefdn.mb.ca or directly in support of multiple myeloma research at www.canadahelps.org
