DAVID SCHROEDER 1924 - 2015 David Doc' Schroeder, 91, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, September 27, 2015. He was married to the love of his life, Mildred (Bartel), for 66 years. They had three children: Dorothy (Don) Sugimoto, Lynette (Ernie) Wiebe and Alan (Ruth) Schroeder; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. As a young man, David was a Conscientious Objector, and a pastor, until polio struck him. After his convalescence, he obtained several degrees and became a much loved and respected professor at Canadian Mennonite Bible College (now CMU). His passion for peace and justice, the global church, and the Mennonite church were equalled by his passion for his family. He lived in a four generational house for over 50 years, and his strength, wisdom and gentle nature will remain with us forever. Thank you to Dr. Jowett and the staff at Charleswood Clinic, Rowena and Janice and all the other wonderful home care workers that made it possible for him to live at home this past year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CMU Schroeder Research Fund, 500 Shaftesbury Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R3P 2N2 or Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9. The viewing will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Charleswood Mennonite Church, 699 Haney St., Winnipeg, MB at 7:00 p.m. with sharing at 7:30 p.m. There will also be viewing prior to the service. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2015 at Bethel Mennonite Church, 870 Carter Ave., Winnipeg, MB at 10:00 a.m. The burial will follow at the Mennonite Memorial Gardens, Winnipeg, MB. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Dear Mildred and family, This evening I had an email from Harry Huebner who informed me of the passing of David. Condolences and a deep sense of God's presence be yours, even as David is now IN THE presence. My mind goes way back to the days when I was at CMBC in the early fifties and beyond. Praise be for David's life and all that he contributed to God's eternal and peaceful Kingdom. I send you love, Hedy - Posted by: Hedy Sawadsky (Friend) on: Oct 04, 2015

  • Here in Saskatoon and Warman Doc Schroeder will be remembered by those of us working with Warman and District Citizens Group working to prevent Eldorado from establishing a Uranium Hexafluoride Refinery. He met several times with the Federal review panel in 1979-1980 to explain the views of Mennonites on peace. In part his intervention kept Eldorado out of the Warman area.Jake Buhler, President, Mennonite Historical Society of Saskatchewan. - Posted by: Jake Buhler (friend) on: Oct 02, 2015

  • Unfortunately, I was never a student in Dr. Schroeder's classes; fortunately - decades later - I was able to meet him as colleague and discussant. A man of refined and incisive thought, thinking and fore-thought, unpretentious, empathic, appreciative, and always, a twinkling eye for absurdity. As Shakespeare's Anthony says of Brutus, 'this was a man'. - Posted by: rudi engbrecht (acquaintance) on: Oct 01, 2015

  • David has made an immeasurable contribution to society and we will all be beneficiaries of his teaching and testimony, through both word and deed, for generations to come. He has mentored and given his quiet wisdom to many while testifying of his Lord of justice and peace. We were blessed and will always be grateful for his journey with us. - Posted by: Ron Janzen (Executive Director, Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba) on: Oct 01, 2015

  • Thinking of the Schroeder family as you grieve the loss of your father, grandfather and great-grandfather who touched so many lives. Doc was also such a great mentor and teacher to many of us outside of the family circle, a wise, kind and gentle, loving soul. Your family was blessed by his presence as were all of us who were fortunate to have him touch our lives. Thinking of you during this time of your loss. Thinking of you as you will miss him dearly. May the memories of his life, well lived, be a comfort to you and ever in your hearts and minds. Love, Margaret Ann. With love and prayers to carry on, Margaret Ann - Posted by: Margaret Ann (friend ) on: Sep 30, 2015
