VOJTECH MATOUSEK It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father and Deda, brother and uncle, Vojtech Matousek. Vojtech (Voita) is survived by his loving and devoted soul mate Kveta; son Mark (Wendy) and daughter Nora Duguid (Carl) along with grandchildren Dayton, Colten, Kaenen, Rory, Nyah, Everett and Reese. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory sister Zdena, and extended family in the Czech Republic. On February 5, 1936 Voita was born in Olomouc Czechoslovakia. Educated as an Engineer Designer, he was introduced to art at a young age by his mom and soon shared the same passion. Having lived through German occupation, Communist takeover in 1948 and the Soviet invasion in 1968, he decided to say goodbye to his home country that had a rich past and embarked on a new life. Voita left his native country with his future wife for Brussels before finally arriving in Calgary in November, 1969 and they were married shortly thereafter. Mark was born in 1970 and an employment opportunity had the family moving to Winnipeg that same year. Nora was born 2 years later and soon afterwards they settled in their present home. Working as an Engineer Designer he never gave up his artistic talent and in 1986 pursued his dream of painting full time. His love of nature, and the vast Canadian landscapes allowed the family to explore Canada, from coast to coast, and he captured Canada in his art. He fell in love with Northwestern Ontario, especially Lake of the Woods with its captivating scenery inherently reflected in his paintings. The lake and cabin were his favorite place as he liked to be surrounded by nature and wildlife. His creativity was not limited to art as many projects were initiated by a simple idea and sketch on the back of an envelope. To him there was no technical problem that couldn't be solved. Voita will always be remembered as an extraordinary example of hard work, determination, and perseverance. He loved all animals especially his canine companions. He touched the hearts of many people and will be sadly missed for his warmth, creativity, friendship, and sense of humour. A Celebration of Voita's Life will take place on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Boniface Golf Club, 100 Youville Street, Winnipeg. The family would like to extend special thanks to Palliative Care nurse Ola and the WFPS for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 54 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • Kveta I doubt that you will remember me, but back when you lived in the apartment block on Archibald, where Bev Scott also lived, Voita and I were working at Spiroll. We all had a memorable Christmas meal one year and I have so many fond memories of your family. I have one of Voita's paintings which hang over my desk many years ago. Thinking of you and your family. - Posted by: Naomi Daignault (co-worker in the 70;s) on: Oct 26, 2015

  • Dear Kveta, Having re-united with you and Voita last January 2015 ( 1 day too early for the dinner) brought back great memories of my experiences with Voita. We shared a time in our life when challenges were met with great effort and great satisfaction. I always admired his modesty dignity, work ethic, sensible perspective and great sense of humour. I shall remember you both always. - Posted by: Tony Stewart (Burroughs/Unisys so-worker in Engineering) on: Oct 19, 2015

  • Kveta, our sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of Voita. I (Anna) got to know him as an art instructor. I loved his unique way of doing watercolours. Although I was his student for many years it was difficult to get it just like he painted - reversed technic. You opened up your home to his students, serving us tea and special baking. I have such wonderful memories of your warmth and Voita's ramblings. He was a joy to have as a teacher. We were so sorry to miss his memorial on Wednesday. We just heard about his passing on Thursday. Cherish the memories you have of him. Love, Anna & Rudy Peters - Posted by: Anna & Rudy Peters (Art student) on: Oct 16, 2015

  • Our condolences to the Matousek family. The Celebration of Life today was so filled with love and emotion, beautifully shared stories from both Mark and Nora, he will truly be missed. We will always remember Voita whenever we look at his/our painting of the Canadian Shield that will be hanging over our sofa (once we get it - thanks to the Brick's backlog). Voita will also be remembered for his wonderful, true to character caricature drawings that we so treasure. - Posted by: Verla (Pearson) Forbes and Alan Forbes (coworkers at Burroughs/Unisys) on: Oct 14, 2015

  • Our sincere condolences to the Matousek family. since 2006 we became neighbours. as years went by we also became good friends of Voita & Kveta. It wasen't long before we heard the news that Voita became ill, that totally broke our heart, then suddenly his daughter came knocking on our door & told us that her father passed away.He will be missed so dearly.we will never forget how much he enjoyed waking the dog with his beautiful wife almost every day whether it was winter or summer & we used to watch them through our window each time they went by. we are so glad to have such a wonderful neighbours. • My condolences to the Matousek family. I worked with Voita in the '70s, appreciating the detail and excellence of his technical work, loving his paintings and drawings, and thankful for the warm, friendly and helpful human being that Voita was to all of us. We have several wonderful reminders of Voita hanging on the walls of our home. - Posted by: Ken Burns (Co-worker at Burroughs in the 70s) on: Oct 12, 2015

  • Voita was unique, helpful and funny, as proven in his talent of putting ideas on paper showed in his manny caricatures of many of the employees and staff of Unisys. He was of much help to me, by bringing some of my ideas across and in a real talented way. - Posted by: Rudy Mooyman (Unisys long time friend ) on: Oct 12, 2015

  • Our condolences to the Matousek and Duguid families. Our thoughts are with you. Rest in peace Vojtech. - Posted by: Lori and Chester Lobchuk (friend) on: Oct 12, 2015

  • Mark I am sorry to hear of the loss of your father. Hugs for you and your family - Posted by: Joanne Imah (Marks friend) on: Oct 12, 2015

  • It was my privilege to work with Voita at Burroughs. His skill in creating hand sketches of new concepts and calm positive assurance shared with inexperienced team members such as myself were admired and respected by the entire team. I treasure a watercolor of children skating on the Assiniboine Park pond. Rest in peace Voita. - Posted by: John Earl (Co-worker at Burroughs) on: Oct 11, 2015

  • Our most sincere condolences for the whole family Matousek. Vojta and his extraordinary life story, full of hard fights, was always an inspiration. Our uncle and aunt symbolized a distant lighthouse behind the iron curtain for us - the living example that life in dignity and freedom was possible. He was a smart, funny, charming fellow, a devoted father, the best husband and a very talented artist. In the name of the whole family Voda as well as in the name of my Dad (Czech uncle Milos), who passed last year. - Posted by: David Voda (cousin) on: Oct 11, 2015

  • Sincere sympathy to you, Kveta, Mark, Nora and your families. You all worked in the Engineering Records at Burroughs, Unisys for a short period of time. Voita was so proud of all your achievements and how well you functioned as a family unit. Voita will be remembered for his positive outlook on life and for his art. - Posted by: Joan Navitka (Friend and co-worker) on: Oct 10, 2015

  • My condolences to the Matousek family. At Burroughs, Vojtech was one of those people who saw the humor in life and beauty in ordinary things. When I was down, with a twinkle in his eye, and just a hint of a smile on his lips, he would he would offer to me a new, and often humorous perspective on the situation, and cheer me up. He had a rare talent for mechanical design, for art, and an equally rare talent for living. - Posted by: Dan Card (co-worker) on: Oct 08, 2015

  • I had the privilege of working with Vojtech at Burroughs in the late 1970s/early 1980s, where he was employed as a mechanical designer. He was well known for his detailed and realistic-looking pencil sketches of mechanical devices. Vojtech also used his creative imagination to do caricature drawings of many of his co-workers, myself included. He was well-respected for his technical abilities and drawing talent, and also admired for his positive, friendly personality. A true gentleman, and a great guy to work with! - Posted by: Walter Turchyn (co-worker at Burroughs/Unisys) on: Oct 07, 2015
