JOAN ADELINE HOPKO
Date of Passing: Oct 08, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOAN ADELINE HOPKO (nee MISZTUR) 1940 - 2015 It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother Joan Adeline Hopko (Misztur) on October 8, 2015 at the age of 75. Joan was predeceased by her parents Frank and Zena Misztur and sisters Olga and Mary. Left to cherish her memory are her three children Lyal (Karen), Kimberly (Brian) and Pamela (Jason) including her seven grandchildren, Ryan, Andrew, Riley, Brinly, Tristan, Noah and Peyton. Mom was the youngest of three sisters born and raised by her mother in Russell, Manitoba. Losing her father at the tender age of two following his service in the Second World War, Mom's relationship with her own mother grew to be exceptionally close. Mom moved to Winnipeg at the age of twelve and attended Laura Secord and Gordon Bell while living in the Wolseley area. Upon graduating from high school, mom attended the Manitoba Technical Institute where she won many awards for her speed and typing accuracy as a stenographer, leading to a prosperous career at Office Overload. Upon having her three children, mom changed careers becoming a devoted housewife, mother and landlord. In the following fifty years, mom remained a dedicated, proud and conscientious landlord to many residential properties. Over the course of these years, mom cared for and attended to her tenants much like extended family, with many often using Lipton Street and Hopko Street interchangeably. The countless hours and dedication invested in maintaining, renovating, and keeping meticulous records for each property was fueled by the pride she gained from endless hours of hard work. Mom's work ethic gave her a great sense of accomplishment knowing she was capable and competent in handling most needs for herself and her tenants, independently and successfully. As a young woman, mom loved figure skating, bowling, baking/cooking and sewing. When the rare opportunity surfaced for mom to bowl with her grandkids, her bowling skills not only shone, but she became even more endearing in the eyes of those that loved her most. She was very well known for the magnitude of her traditional Ukrainian meals, where by leaving with busting pants was not only expected but also accompanied with a care package of food to enjoy the next day. This love of food and entertaining carried through her older years making her the social event coordinator amongst her closest friends. Mom always honoured and celebrated the lives of others in effort to make those she cared about feel special. Frequenting restaurants and meeting up with close friends was a regular highlight of mom's daily routine. Mom cherished the moments spent with her children and grandchildren at special celebrations over fine homemade food and wine. Being together as a family is what mom most enjoyed and truly made her happy. In fact, in mom's final days she was asked about what she was most grateful for and she simply replied, "my family." Our mother was a kind and special woman who touched the lives of many. She will always be remembered as a tremendous worker with a caring, generous and loving soul. We love you mom. Lay peacefully. The grass is cut, the snow is shoveled, and the rent has been collected. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Parish, 255 Stafford Street, with a short viewing prior to the service. A light lunch will be served. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundations or Winnipeg Humane Society. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Dear Joan it comes with sadness to hear the news it's a numb feeling when I heard but immediately I thought of your caring ways for others. You were always there at your happiest with friends and of course family as you treated me like family. You would come to my home on Valor for family functions and always arrived with a gift and I will never forget your kindness to my daughter she was just a baby but you got to see her grow and you always remembered birthdays come for coffee and cake. Numerous visits at my mothers we enjoyed having you there. Joan you are truly an Angel as you were standing right in front of me and I could see your kindness glow so I know you are watching over us because your a deserving Angel I will never forget. Bless you. I sincerely thank you for the good times we shared together. Rest in Paradise Joan you will be missed by your many friends. My sincere sympathy to the family. Lyal, Kim and Pam Your mom was probably the best friend I've ever had. I will miss her terribly. She helped me in many ways when I first came to Winnipeg and all through the years. She was my mentor when it came to anything to do with properties, and never steered me wrong. She would always help a friend, no matter how tired or stressed she was herself. That is very rare these days. I wish you all absolute peace in the days ahead Terry Roussin - Posted by: Terry Roussin (friend) on: Oct 13, 2015
