Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN MATWICHUK It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Grampa and Great-Grampa at the age of 93 years. Dad passed away peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre on Sunday, October 11, 2015, with his granddaughter Jennifer by his side. Left to cherish John's memory are his sons, Brian (Alexandra) and Richard (Cheryl); grandchildren, Laura (Jonathan Bitze), Amy (Josh) Close, Melanie (Terence Smith), Steven (Jessica Dixon) and Jennifer (Bill) Kocsis; great-grandchildren, Béla, Richard, Sebastian and Scout; his sister, Helen Barkman; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friend Helen Trafiak. He was predeceased by his wife Nellie in 1995; parents, Julia and Paul; as well as sisters, Minnie Hulks and Sophie Zerull. On April 30, 1922 John was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He grew up in the North End area and attended St. John's High School. He served in the Army in the Second World War with the R.C.A. 24th Field Artillery. John returned to Winnipeg and married Nellie on September 7, 1946. He was employed as a Boilermaker at the CPR Weston Shops until his retirement in 1987. John was a proud veteran and long standing member of the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Branch #141 of the Royal Canadian Legion, and a member of the New Horizons Ukrainian Senior Citizens Club. John was happiest when tending to his large garden and sharing in its harvest with family, friends and neighbours. In later years he also enjoyed gambling trips with Helen and their many friends. In compliance with John's wishes, a private family Interment will be held at a later date. Many thanks to the staff of Deer Lodge Centre, especially Kim, who made Dad's final days comfortable. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Richard Wojcik of Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB in care of arrangements 204.586.8668.
