Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUTH HALLONQUIST (nee BOYES) August 13, 1933 - October 29, 2015 The family of Ruth Hallonquist announces her peaceful passing on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at home. The pain and suffering from cancer is now gone and eternal peace is now hers. Ruth is survived by her beloved husband Barry Dewar, her sons Andrew (Patricia), and Ernest, her daughter Karen (Bryan Carmichael), grandchildren Kayla and Dawson Hallonquist, Matthew and Logan Carmichael, and Lillian and Sarah Hallonquist, Jocelyn Allard, brothers Alastair and Ken, sister Margaret, several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. She was predeceased by her first husband of 45 years, Bill Hallonquist. Ruth was born in Wadena, Saskatchewan on August 13, 1933. She moved to Winnipeg in 1950 to attend the University of Manitoba to study Home Economics, BSC. While in university she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority where she made lifelong friends. Ruth was a teacher all of her life. Most of her teaching career was at Sturgeon Creek School, she also taught at Edmond Partridge School. She taught home economics and family life for the first part of her career. She went back to the University of Manitoba to further her education where she received her premasters in English and began teaching English. While at Sturgeon Creek Ruth was involved in many student activities from chaperoning dances to grad and cheerleading. Her biggest passion was cheerleading; where she thought of the cheerleaders as "her kids". Many of those "kids" continue to value their relationship with Ruth. Ruth was involved in many philanthropic organizations. She helped make the community of Kirkfield Park a great place to live and raise her children by her involvement in both church and community. She was one of the founding members of St. Chad's Anglican Church. Ruth was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. She volunteered in many Rotary charitable events. Ruth loved to throw a party. She was a perfect host. She belonged to many social groups. She was a member of the Hendy Bay Bridge Club long after they stopped playing bridge. She also belonged to the Red Hat Society. Politics was important to Ruth. She was very politically active; from supporting Bill in his career in politics to be a lifelong member of the Liberal Party. She was able to cast one more vote in the recent election and was thrilled with the outcome. Ruth touched many people's lives both through her career and her family life. We are grateful for having known her. She will be truly missed. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Chad's Anglican Church at Kirkfield United Church, 472 Kirkfield St. Our dear Ruth was a short term cancer survivor and please in lieu of flowers, donations made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 would be truly appreciated. Bernice Phillips in remembrance of Ruth I went to the University of Manitoba with Ruth a long time ago, I arrived from a little town in Saskatchewan, and so did Ruth. We stayed in the Residence on campus and quickly formed a friendship with Lorraine and Gloria and Lois. We would eat meals and have evening get-togethers many many times during the week. When you’re away from home for the first time, these relationships are very important. Ruth was a good good friend with us all. She loved to laugh, she loved to talk, and she loved to share her life with us. We have all stayed in touch as the years have gone by. My condolences to her family. Ruth was very special. - Posted by: Bernice Phillips (University of Manitoba friend ) on: Nov 04, 2015

Ruth Hallonquist - or as I always called her - "Mrs. Hallonquist" was one of the "Moms on Henday Bay" when we kids were all growing up together that made sure we were all safe and getting along. I have known her all my life along with all her children. She had a wonderful smile and a great laugh and with that enjoyed life to the fullest. The ski trips and pool parties with all the families are memories that will never ever fade and along with that my fondest and most cherished memories of "Mrs. Hallonquist". Peace to Ruth and to all who were near and dear to her. - Posted by: Heather Morton ("One of the Moms on Henday Bay - That looked out for all us kids!") on: Nov 03, 2015
