ANNIE DUECK (nee ZACHARIAS) Annie Dueck (nee Zacharias), born on January 13, 1922, was promoted to glory on November 20, 2015 at the age of 93. She grew up in the village of Rheinland, MB, as a daughter of Peter and Marie Zacharias, in a blended family of 19 children. Annie went to work as a maid in Rosenort at the age of 15 and in the following years met Cornelius F. Dueck. They fell in love and were married on November 9, 1941, and celebrated 65 years of marriage. Cornie and Annie had four daughters and two sons: Adeline (Don) Warkentin, Mary (Stan) Klassen, Elvira (Elmer) Warkentin, Barry (Barbara) Dueck, Alvin (Arlene) Dueck and Jeannette (Elmer) Thiessen. The family tree includes 16 grandchildren and spouses, 24 great-grandchildren and spouses, and one great-great-grandchild. Cornie predeceased Annie in 2007. Annie and Cornie farmed in the Rosenort area for twenty-five years, and then were involved in pastoral ministry for the next twenty-five years in Kamsack and Pelly, SK, Aylmer, ON, and Lowe Farm, MB. Upon retiring they moved to Steinbach, MB where Mom lived until 2011. Annie deeply loved her family and had a very special relationship with her grandchildren. Annie deeply loved her God. She read her Bible and prayed daily for all her family and many missionaries serving around the world. Annie was an incredibly creative and talented woman. She designed and sewed clothes for her family, beautiful wedding gowns for her daughters and many nieces, and created amazing wedding cakes. She knitted, crocheted and quilted, and her home displayed beautiful needle point pictures. All her children and grandchildren were blessed with creative gifts. Annie was a life-long learner and read extensively. Her grade eight education was enhanced with knowledge from the World Book Encyclopedia which she "googled" constantly. Sports was a keen interest of hers and she loved watching hockey, baseball, football, curling, figure skating and following Wimbledon competitions. Puzzling was another hobby in her later years. Annie loved to go camping with family and she and Dad enjoyed traveling. Annie enjoyed reasonably good health until December 2014, although a severe case of shingles and losing a kidney finally forced her to give up driving and living on her own at the age of 89. She moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her children and enjoyed four years in the Donwood Assisted Living Apartments. Her health declined quickly in the last three months. Annie passed away peacefully with family by her side. Annie will be greatly missed by her family, her Zacharias family, her Dueck nieces and nephews and friends. The staff at Donwood quickly learned to love her beautiful blue eyes and ready smile. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the care of Dr. Rowland Hayward, Dr. Myron Thiessen and all the wonderful, caring Donwood Manor Personal Care Home doctors and staff. The family will miss her so much but are thankful she has gone to heaven to celebrate with Jesus, their Dad and many loved ones. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with viewing prior to the service. The burial will follow at the Heritage Cemetery in Steinbach, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Donwood Manor Personal Care Home, Winnipeg, MB. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Mrs. Dueck knit quite a few prayer shawls for our ministry, Women Refreshed at the Well. Several of them have been given out to people who have come, however I still have a couple that she has knit, and they will be lovingly used and given. I appreciated how she took the time to knit them, and although they were not perfect, they were uniquely done with love. Not many people are still knitting in their late 80's. Blessings to the family - as well as the prayers of others to help support you during this time - May God be your provider of peace and comfort as only HE IS. With love and thanks, Joy Klassen, exec director, Women Refreshed at the Well - Posted by: Women Refreshed at the Well ministry (friend of family) on: Nov 21, 2015

  • Jeannette and Elmer and family - her race was well run - and she is with Jesus!! You will miss her, as your life has been very involved and intertwined with hers. You cared for her and loved her well. May God give you great strength and peace and comfort as you lay her earthly body to rest. It is only till you meet again in Heaven. Love you Lots, Joy and Alvin Klassen - Posted by: Joy and Alvin Klassen (friends/family with Jeannette and Elmer Thiessen) on: Nov 21, 2015

  • When I came into this world, probably kicking and screaming, Annie, my half-sister on Mother's side, was already a 17 year-old teenager. I don't imagine I was the most popular addition to the Zacharias Family. The "blended" Zacharias Family already numbered 15 and now 16. Dad brought 10 (6 boys; 4 girls) and Mom (5 girls) into the union. The beautiful thing was that I never felt unwanted nor unloved. As a matter of fact, it took me many years to even realize that the Zacharias Family consisted of three separate and quite unique parts. The most wonderful times for me as a "kid" were Christmas, Easter and birthdays when the entire clan would get together to eat, talk, laugh and sing. Those are the times when I experienced love, joy and peace that can only come from our Father God who created the family in the first place. I cannot recall any specific event about my sister Annie but I know she was there. We visited Annie when she lived in Steinbach. She took us out for supper. We laughed and shared a lot. Later, at her condo, she took me aside and told me things about me and her, and the family I grew up in, especially her relationship with her stepfather, my Dad. She spoke very positively about Dad, which I appreciated. When I consider the nature and size of our family it must have been tough at times. Annie was a wonderful sister and a marvelous lady (much like the Mother we shared) and even though we were not particularly close, I loved, cared for and admired her. Just like the Mother we shared, her life was not always easy. God's richest blessings on all the Duecks: Adeline, Mary, Jeanette, Elvera, Barry and Alvin. Love, Uncle John and Aunt Marge. - Posted by: John and Marge Zacharias (Brother and Sister-in-Law) on: Nov 21, 2015
