KATHERINE HELPS (SIMCOE) The family sadly announces the passing of our beloved mother and gramma, Katherine (Kay) Helps, on Wednesday, December 2, 2015. Katherine was born May 4, 1920 in Tyndall, MB, the second of six children of Peter and Sophie Simcoe (Symko). After graduating from high school, Mom moved to Winnipeg where she was employed with various government departments - national security, taxation and old age security - over the next 40 plus years. It was love at first sight when Mom met Dad just before he was shipped overseas. They corresponded and upon his return they married in September, 1946. They were a devoted couple, blissfully in love for 65 years until Dad was taken from her in 2011. To the surprise of her family, she carried on stoically with her quiet dignity and lived independently until January, 2015 when she suffered a stroke. She recovered and spent the last few months in the kind and good hands of Golden Links Lodge. Mom was a strong, feisty lady with a good sense of humour who was proud of her skills at crypt-o-quips, crosswords, math, word puzzles and income tax forms. She had a talent for petit point, knitting and baking. She loved to walk, was a Bomber fan and was always up on politics and world events. She and Dad enjoyed their happiest times with family at the cottage at West Hawk Lake. She was a loving wife to Dad and a wonderful mother and gramma who adored her family. Katherine was predeceased by her husband Clifford, sisters Mary and Ann and brothers Steven and Peter. She leaves behind to cherish her memory daughters Linda (Daniel) Martin and Lesley (Jim) Thompson, grandsons Gregg (Laura), Todd (Brenda) and Mark (Kristy), great-granddaughters Jenna, Paige, Alexa and Sarah, as well as her sister June Rae, in-laws John Helps and Donna Simcoe and numerous nieces and nephews. Our family would like to thank the awesome, caring staff of Golden Links Lodge who made Mom's last months pleasant and comfortable. We'd also like to thank the staff at Misericordia Interim PCH for the care they gave Mom during her three month stay and to the staff on 5S at Victoria General Hospital. There will be a private service for immediate family. Interment at Chapel Lawn. No flowers please. If you wish, a donation in Katherine's name can be made to the Southeast Whiteshell Fire Department, Box 88, Whiteshell PO, R0E 2H0 or a charity of your choice. Sweet dreams Mom. We love you and we'll miss you. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

  • So sorry to hear of your Lois, your Mom taught me how to spell, knit, and laugh, a very special gal - Posted by: Marna Overton (Friend) on: Dec 13, 2015

  • To Linda, Daniel, Lesley, Jim and your families: Marion told me of your mom's passing. I had just been thinking about your mom and dad as it was time for Christmas greetings. Aunt Kay was one of my favourite relatives. She always had time to visit and was genuinely interested in what was happening in the McNab clan. Gordon and I were thrilled when your mom and dad arrived unexpectedly at our 40th wedding anniversary celebration. We visited them in Winnipeg "South of the Border" and appreciated their devotion to each other and their pride in the family. "Smile and remember" your parents and grandparents. With love and caring from Aunt Mary - Posted by: Mary McNab (niece) on: Dec 06, 2015

  • Sending sincere condolences to Kay's (Mrs. Helps') family, sister-in-law Lesley and brother Jim Thompson, nephew Mark and wife Kristy Thompson, and Linda and Danny Martin and their sons and daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, we are very sad to loose such a wonderful lady. Knowing the family for a very long time, we too will miss hearing how Kay is doing. Our hearts are heavy with sadness over your loss. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Jim and Lynn Osachuk and family (Family) on: Dec 05, 2015
