Doug was one of my favourite people. Worked with him for 30 years -many of those years organizing Minor Hockey, 6-man Football, and Athletic Special Events throughout the year for the kids in the City of Winnipeg. Swim Meets, Track Meets, Table Tennis, Softball Tournaments, to name just a few. For many youngsters these were their first introduction to a multitude of Sports out of their local Community Centres thanks to Doug. A great individual-a great friend. R.I.P. I met Doug through work many years ago. He lived and loved life to the fullest! Always had a smile and a warm quiet hello! He loved sports and was the parks and recreation " sports guy". He dedicated his life to sports and Winnipegers owe him a big thank you. - Posted by: Jim Swail (Co-worker and friend) on: Jan 05, 2016

I first met Doug many years ago shortly after his arrival back in Winnipeg from Toronto. He was just beginning his career with Parks and Recreation and I became his girlfriend. We spent many wonderful weekends either at the Winnipeg Ski Club or schussing the slopes of La Rivière with Noel and Betty as our hosts! Doug became a good friend to all my brothers as well and he spent many a cold morning on the slopes persevering with us as he talked us down the hill . He always talked about his dream to develop the area around his family home in Roseisle. Although we kept in touch over the years I never had the chance to visit the creation of his dream. As was already said in the preceding tributes Doug was a fun loving, kind and generous man. Doug, Your impact on my life will never be forgotten . Carolyn Purdy (Liddle). doug was a lifetime friend whose memories of our lasting friendship i will always cherish.i am so happy i talked to him just prior to christmas.doug and i always kept in touch over the many years i lived in vancouver and had many laughs to-gether i could really get his funny bone going.we shared an apt.on roslyn road and then found the infamous 485 wellington cresc. mansion which was often referred to as party central. doug and i and many friends spent weekends at the sugar shack when skiing at holiday mountain resort.doug always made sure you felt welcomed either skiing or volley ball at our summer home the winnipeg canoe club.over many years we enjoyed our time together doing many things too numerous to mention.i told doug i was thinking of coming to wpg.this summer and we would connect and wine and dine.doug was happy to hear about this im saddened this will not take place with dougs passing. i am heart broken but i will never forget my lifetime pal. freddie-boy - Posted by: freddie raeside (life time friend) on: Jan 01, 2016

Our friend Doug was a kind, gentle, and giving man who was always generous with his time and support. We met over thirty years ago through convening volleyball at Lipsic Hall. We tricked Doug into coaching us in both volleyball and baseball. Much fun and laughter was enjoyed at Birch skiing, tobogganing, playing volleyball and participating in shenanigans. Specials weekends were had at Grand Beach where we would pretend to help him with his annual beer volleyball tournaments. We love you always Doug. I only new Doug through my time spent riding and skiing the wonderful Birch trails, and the chats we'd have with him when onsite. More often than not he was around to greet us with a warm smile and a bit of friendly casual talk. Doug, you will be missed. Thank you for the many gifts of time and place you've given me, my friends, and the Manitoba sport community. - Posted by: Scott A Brown (Acquaintance) on: Dec 29, 2015

Thanks to Doug for inviting me, I was one of the original group of 5 bachelors who shared occupancy of the 485 Wellington Crescent mansion that can only be described as 'Party Central' in the good old days. Doug was always full of fun and he was a truly great guy to know. He and the rest of the original 485 group were all members of the Winnipeg Canoe Club. To this day I have always cherished the many fun and wonderful memories from those times. Thanks again Doug. I hope we will meet again. - Posted by: Dick Jones (485 Wellington Crescent and Winnipeg Canoe Club pal) on: Dec 29, 2015

I met Doug in the mid 1990s. I'll never forget our first meeting. A friend of mine and I went up to visit Doug and discuss the possibility of having more mountain bike races at Birch, as well as to ask his permission to try to have the Birch site named as the venue for the Pan Am Games mountain bike event. I gave my pitch to Doug and told him I thought by changing the way we did some things, We being (the cycling association and some of the mountain bike clubs), we could drastically increase participation numbers and grow the sport. Doug looked at me like I was crazy! Actually he said some things to me you probably wouldn't print here! But he gave our ideas a chance and many in the cycling community developed good friendships with Doug, including myself. I spent a few nights over the years sleeping on his couch when we had spent the day working on trails. I always enjoyed our talks about sport. Doug was very generous and loved sports. I always admired how much he enjoyed watching people enjoy his site. It did not matter if you were a cyclist, skier, runner or Bird watcher Doug was willing to share his great trails with you. I remember a few people asking why he would let people use his property for all these sporting events. To me the answer was simple and straight forward. Because he can, and he loves sports. Doug we will all miss you, I hope wherever you are there are some trails for you to watch over. Dave Barclay - Posted by: dave barclay (friend) on: Dec 28, 2015
