VALGERDUR PATTERN September 17, 1921 - January 4, 2016 Valgerdur Pattern peacefully passed away on January 4, 2016, at the age of 94, at Oakview Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Val (Valla) was born on September 17, 1921 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up on the family farm near Riverton. She attended school at Hnausa, and came to Winnipeg as a young woman. There, she met and married Edward (Ted) Pattern. Val was predeceased by her father Andres in 1976, her mother Elisabet in 1983, an infant daughter Valerie in 1955, and her husband Edward (Ted) in 1995. Val was also predeceased by siblings: Guthny (Gwen) in 1997, Bergthore (Faye), in 2012, Thorunn (Terry), Horthun (Harry) in 1984, and Jonina in 2014; and daughters-in-law Ursula Pattern (Bill) in 2004 and Shelley Finney (Tim) in 1989. Left to mourn her passing are her children: Bill, Betty (Jim), Barry (Sharon), Valerie (Dave), Lilly (Lorne), Tim (Nichole), and George (Joelle). Also left to mourn are her siblings Maria (of Arborg) and Baldur (of Gimli). She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mom was a devoted wife and mother who took great pride in her Icelandic heritage and was active in her community. She supported the Boy Scouts when her children were young and volunteered as a canvasser for the Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Salvation Army until well into her 80s. Her greatest accomplishment was her excellence in crafts, especially knitting. Every family member has received many of her knitted garments over the years. She was a volunteer knitter for the St. Agnes Guild of the Children's Hospital and continued to donate her knitting to the Children's Hospital Gift Shop until she was well past 90. Mom also enjoyed watching Prairie Public Television and included it in her many charities. The funeral will take place Friday, January 8 at 12:30 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3H 1B9. Private interment will already have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Val's memory to the St. Agnes Guild, Health Sciences Centre, 820 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1R9, or one of her many charities NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I am so sorry for the loss of your Mom and Amma. Although I did not have the pleasure of growing up close with your mom she was always not far from my thoughts. She had a kind gentle presence which I admired. I still have the beautiful sweaters she knitted for both my now adult children. I will cherish them always. • My deepest sympathy. I only knew her as the grandma of Jennifer, Alison and Will, and the mother in law of my sister Ursula. She was gentle, smart, and kind, and will be sorely missed by her family. - Posted by: Erika Koenig-Sheridan () on: Jan 07, 2016
