EDITH CATHERINE RATHS The family wishes to announce the death of Edith Catherine Raths (Florstedt) on January 5, 2016. Edith Raths was born in Gibsonburg, Ohio on May 1, 1920 to Frank and Edith Florstedt. From an early age she had an insatiable love for books and music. Her love of reading led her to a pursuit of a career in library science at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio where she met her future husband Wilfred Raths of Lemberg, Saskatchewan. The couple married on June 1, 1942 and moved to Rosthern, Sask. In 1949 they moved to Winnipeg. While Pastor Raths served as the pastor of The Lutheran Church of the Cross for over 31 years, Mrs. Raths became an accomplished organist and choir director. In retirement she was active with the Lutheran Volunteer Ministries and continued to read and travel extensively. Although Edith will be remembered for her musical and choral contributions to her church and associated organizations, her most notable achievement was being Mother to her eight children, all of whom are deeply indebted to her. She accepted and encouraged individualism in each of them. Her quiet authority, tempered with a lively sense of humor, taught them many of the most important tenets to living life well. A continuing living legacy to her life is the deep bond of love and respect all of her children have for each other. Edith is survived by children, David with children, Dieter, Mary, William, Anna; Edie (Biberdorf) with children, Rebecca and Sarah; Wilfred Jr. with children, Aaron and Rachel; Catherine; Ruth (Herie) with children, Danielle, Kirsten and Joshua; Paul (Wendy) with children, Kristjan, Eric, Andrea and Julia; Deborah (Patrick Riley) with children, Johanna, Allison and Patricia; Taylor (Tim Jones) as well as seventeen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Joan Wolford of Lincoln, Nebraska and sister-in-law Lona Appel of Regina, Saskatchewan. Edith was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 60 years the Reverend Wilfred Karl Raths, infant daughter Irene Theresa, brothers Luther and Robert, and sons-in-law Denis Herie and John Biberdorf. A service for Edith will take place on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at The Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Lutheran Church of the Cross (Cross fund), Canadian Lutheran World Relief, or the Canadian Bible Society.
