DAVID EDWARD SPENDER David Edward Spender, born May 9, 1941 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, died, peacefully, at Riverview Health Centre on January 8, 2016 with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joan and son Stephen (Carmella, Daniel and Alyson), daughter Janice (Tim, Jordan and Caitlyn), brother Gerald (Maureen), sister-in-law Beryl, nephew Bruce (Linda, Alyssa and Ashley, niece Carolin (Justina, Thomas, Mason). He was predeceased by his father William, his mother Doris, his father-in-law David, mother-in-law Beatrice and his brother-in-law Jim. Dave worked as an accountant for a number of years until taking early retirement. Following his retirement he drove school bus for the River East School Division for 25 years. Dave also operated a home based Tax Preparation Business for over 40 years. When it was apparent that he would not be able to continue on with this Tax Business, he was very concerned about the many loyal clients that he has serviced over the years. Dave loved to travel and went on a number of cruises with his wife which they thoroughly enjoyed. The most memorable vacation was the one the whole family took to Jamaica in 2013. The good times shared on that trip, with the children and grandchildren, will forever be in our hearts. Many thanks to Dr. Crow and all the nursing staff at Riverview Health Centre for their compassionate care during David's brief stay at their facility. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at Klassen Funeral Home 1897 Henderson Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, on behalf of the family, to Riverview Health Centre and CancerCare Manitoba. • My sincere condolences to you Joan and your family on Dave's passing. He will be missed as a co-worker at R.E.S.D., brother and executive member of our CUPE local and trustee on the provinces's Manitoba School Board Association Pension Plan. His accounting and tax services will be greatly missed by his many clients. Getting my taxes done each year was enjoyable as I got to see you both, catch up on family news, listen to Dave's wisecracks and then followed by his friendly smile. Rest in Peace my Friend. - Posted by: Peggy Carson (Friend) on: Jan 17, 2016

  • To Dave's family; I am very saddened to hear of Dave's passing. Dave was a wonderful, bright shining soul. I was the CUPE Local's National Rep. during the time he drove bus with Riverside School District. I worked with Dave and the Local for 8 years and became so familiar with Dave's wonderful contributions to his brothers and sisters in the Cupe Local as well as his abilities in many avenues of his endeavours. He had many friends and a beautiful smile that was like a welcoming beacon into his life. He will be missed! Please hold the memories of happy times close as those are what will sustain in his passing. - Posted by: June Ross (I was the National Representative of the School District Dave was a part of) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • Joan, Condolences to you and your family from Roger and I. - Posted by: Megan Poitras (Joan's cousin) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • In addition to his many talents and as stated in the obit, Dave was also involved in his Union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees. he contributed in many and varied important ways. He represented his non-teaching co-workers in Manitoba schools by serving as a Trustee on the province-wide Manitoba School Boards Association Pension Plan. He presented reports on this pension plan to various forums including his own CUPE Local, a School Division Sector Conference and at annual CUPE Manitoba Conventions. He was an excellent representative of his sisters and bothers in Manitoba School Divisions. I am shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. I recall many of our Sudoku "battles" at meetings over the years where we challenged each other to see who could solve the Sudoku first. Dave usually won. I will miss you, brother. - Posted by: Bob Malazdrewich (Union colleague) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • My condolences to Dave's family on his passing. We were friends through CUPE and even though we lived 600 km apart, kept in touch over the years. He was the School Sector Pension Rep and I sincerely appreciated his thoroughness, honesty and integrity. He will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Sue Lambert (friend) on: Jan 15, 2016
