Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHE HONOURABLE JOHN HARVARD, PC, OM, LLD 23RD LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF MANITOBA June 4, 1938 - January 9, 2016 John Harvard, born in Glenboro, MB, passed away peacefully in Winnipeg on January 9 having fought cancer stoically and with hope. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Bovey, his children Traci (Reg), Darren (Lori) and Stephanie; grandchildren Christopher (Katrine), Andrew, Randi (Jeff) and Scott (Odessa); great-grandsons Colton and Rebel; his sister Sylvia, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his loving stepchildren Alixe (Jeremy) and Katherine (Rory); and step-grandchildren Georgia, Zoe, Oscar and Lola; and Lorne, Jenni (Fred) and Lindsay. He was predeceased by his daughter Joey, son Sasha, and his parents Harry and Mabel Heidman. A long journalism career earned him an ACTRA award in 1976. Liberal MP for St. James, Charleswood, Assiniboia, he served 16 years in Parliament from 1988 to 2004, and was Manitoba's 23rd Lieutenant Governor from 2004 to 2009. In retirement he volunteered actively for the many causes he stood for during his journalism and political careers, including Winnipeg's Social Planning Council, Winnipeg Harvest's Poverty Committee and the Canadian Muslim Leadership Institute. His interest in politics, world affairs and social justice never wavered, the motto in his coat of arms being Serve the Public Good. He was the recipient of many awards in addition to the Order of Manitoba, including the Canada 125 Commemorative Medal, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Order of St. John, and Iceland's Order of the Falcon. In 2005 he received an Honorary Degree from the University of Manitoba. Appreciation and admiration are extended to the staff of CancerCare, Cancer Urgent Care, Palliative Home Care and the Palliative Care Unit at Riverview Hospital. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to the Buhler Gallery, St. Boniface Hospital, 409 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2H 2A6; Winnipeg Harvest, 1085 Winnipeg Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0S2; or The John Harvard Smart and Caring Community Fund, Glenboro Foundation, Box 147, Glenboro, MB, R0K 0X0. A memorial service will be held Monday, January 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the Victoria Inn, 1808 Wellington Avenue, Centennial Ballroom, Winnipeg. Interment will be at the Glenboro Cemetery at a later date. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends on the passing of Lt. Gov. John Harvard,a fine man and a great Manitoban who so ably demonstrated a life well lived! Thank you for graciously officiating and hosting a reception for our 25th anniversary in Oct 2006. Specific members were presented with awards of appreciation and plaques and of course the complimentary "photo op". These are treasured!
