MARY TROTTIER It is with profound sadness and loving memories that the family announces the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Mary Trottier (née Demumieux). After a short illness, on January 15, 2016, Mary went peacefully to meet her Lord and Saviour, with her family by her side, at the Victoria General Hospital. She was 102 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Trottier; her father and mother Joseph and Marie Demumieux; her uncles Alphonse and Victor Demumieux; as well as by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law with whom she had close relationships. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Elaine (Ulysse) Poirier from Winnipeg; son James Trottier (Liza Linklater) from Seoul, Korea; granddaughter Andrea (Doug) Trump; great-grandson Myles and great-granddaughter Kylie from Ottawa; grandson Anthony from Winnipeg; sister-in-law Terry Trottier from Alberta; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Until her death, she remained a repository of memory for the extended family. Mary Trottier was born in Stettler, AB on October 6, 1913 to Joseph and Marie Demumieux. She grew up on a farm at Homewood, MB and then moved to Winnipeg. She married Joseph Trottier in 1942. After 53 years of marriage, Joseph passed away on January 30, 1995. Mary was a devout Catholic who practiced her faith and was very involved in the Catholic Women's League (CWL). In 1960, she suggested that a council be started in St. Norbert. She was a founding member and held the position of President on two occasions as well as a number of other executive positions over the years. She was an active participating member until well into her 80s and was still a member attending some of the special meetings and events until her death. Many thanks to all her CWL friends, friends from her former condominium and especially everyone who made up the "Happy Gang" every Tuesday afternoon at Mary Mother of the Church. In addition to that, she offered her musical talent and sang in the Sunday mass choir for many years. Relatives and friends will also remember Mary as an avid gardener, excellent seamstress and talented cook. Her relatives and friends will remember her sense of style, her sense of humour and her great laugh. She also enjoyed reading which she continued until late in life. When her children were young, Mary organized yearly summer camping trips to many locations in Canada and the United States. The family thanks Gail Benson, daughter of a friend and co-worker at Ricki's in the 1960s and 1970s, and Janet Beales from Victoria, BC, daughter of Eve Handlon (deceased April 30, 2009) for their kindness to Mary. Eve, especially, was like a sister to Mary. They shared many good times and laughter together, as well as some sad times. It was truly beautiful to see them together! In 1999, at the age of 85, Mary went with Eve to visit Mary's son James and his wife Liza in Thailand where they rode elephants, went on to Malaysia and generally had the time of their lives; they were featured - on elephants - on the cover of the national CWL Digest. A few years earlier Mary had travelled to the Alsace region in France with her granddaughter Andrea to visit her relatives with whom she had continued a lifelong correspondence started by her father who was born in France. During that trip she also visited James and Liza in New York and toured the sights including the United Nations Headquarters. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 22, 2016, at Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg, MB, with Fr. Carl Tarnopolski VG presiding. Viewing will be held one-half hour prior to the Mass. Interment will follow at the St. Norbert Parish Cemetery. Much gratitude is owed to Mary's nieces, Jacqueline Renaud and Lorraine Coyle, for their many visits to Mary while she lived at the Lindenwood Manor, an assisted living residence. We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at the Manor for their compassionate, individualized treatment of Mary. As well, the family wishes to express our gratitude to the staff at the Emergency ward and the 5th floor of the Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care during Mary's few final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Arthritis Society or a charity of your choice.
