Date of Passing: Jan 18, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAGNES CAROLINE MARTINI It is with sadness that the family of Agnes Martini announce her passing on January 18, 2016, at the age of 92 years. Agnes will be deeply missed by her sisters, Bernice Pheifer, Rose Cound; her nieces, Gwen Howe, Janice Fotheringham (George); her nephews, Glen Pfeifer, Henly Pheifer (Arlene), John Pheifer (Tracy), Garen Pheifer, Bruce Martini and Ken Martini (Shelley). She is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews. Agnes was predeceased by her siblings, Anton, Peter, Leona, Casimer and Helen; her brother-in-law Henry Pheifer; nephews, Brian Caffelle and Douglas Howe. Agnes left the family home on the farm in Brokenhead, Manitoba as a young woman. She made her home and her life in East Kildonan and was a pioneer in business. She took up hairdressing and soon opened her tiny salon, Martini's House of Beauty on Henderson Highway, while living in a small suite behind the shop. Later she changed from hairdressing to hardware and worked at the well known neighbourhood business of Kildonan Hardware. Eventually she took over the business and worked for well over 40 years. When she decided to retire at the age of 87, Kildonan Hardware was the last independently owned hardware store in Winnipeg. Agnes was an interesting, helpful and memorable person to everyone who met her during her working years. To her family, Agnes was a unique and independent lady who loved the outdoors, wildlife, gardening and berry picking. Over many decades, she enjoyed her cottages, first at Grand Marais and later at Brereton Lake, and most especially her little log cabin at Seven Sisters Falls. Agnes loved her many dogs and was always accompanied by at least one when enjoying these retreats most weekends and holidays. She was kind enough to share these special places with the Pheifer family who enjoyed many good times during the summers. Bernice and Henry always included her in family gatherings and Agnes was a huge part of the lives of her nieces and nephews. True to her desire, she left this world in her own way while feeding her birds in the backyard of her home that she so loved. A Celebration of Life service will be held this Friday, January 29, 2016 at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 220 Helmsdale Avenue at 10:30 a.m. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Agnes may contribute to an animal shelter of their choice or a charity of your choice. In her memory, please wear a splash of red to celebrate her life. www.seasonsfunerals.ca

Janice and Gwen: So sorry to hear of your Auntie's passing. I'm not sure if you would remember me. I lived next door to Miss Martini above Harbun Insurance Agency. I helped her many times in her shop and with all her dogs. Rusty, especially was my fave! Love him so much! He was like my own dog! I treasured all the time spent with Miss Martini at Seven Sisters and Grand Marais. My sister Debbie and I went to Grand Marais with you girls. I have such fond memories of her. Helping at the many cottages, fixing things here and there with her. She was like an Auntie to me to - I just absolutely LOVED her. I remember coming to her shop and dusting all her knick knacks in the shop and helping the older ladies by doing their pin curls or washing out their rinses. I even remember the bottles of Fanci-ful that had all the "rinses" in it. I remember so many things hanging out with your Auntie. I just wanted to pass on my condolences to your entire family. Henly - OMG! I can't believe Miss Martini was your relative. After all these years of knowing you, it's really neat that you guys are all related. Miss Martini was such a kind and caring lady. I will truly miss her with all my heart. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with your families during this very sad and difficult time. Hugs to you all. - Posted by: Wendy Zilli (Friend/Neighbour) on: Jan 28, 2016

Miss Martini gave me my first haircut as a child living in East Kildonan from birth in 1954 until we moved in 1965. I do not remember her working at Kildonan Hardware, though. We shopped there, and the former owner, Martin Milligan was one of my dad's clients. How bittersweet for me to see these two businesses and the people from them who were connected to my life, in today's obit. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Cathie Morgan Matula (Former customer) on: Jan 27, 2016
