Born: Apr 20, 1926
Date of Passing: Jan 24, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE ROBERT MORROW 1926 - 2016 After many years of declining health, George Robert Morrow died at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, January 24 at the age of 89, with his family by his side. He is survived by his children, Norene, Karen, Valerie Morrow Allan, Paul and Patrick (Cynthia); his grandchildren, Philip (Mari), Andrew (Candice Deacoff) and Gillian Reed; Melissa and Drew Allan; Bryan (Barbara MacDonald), Nathaniel and Elizabeth Morrow; his brother Robert Morrow and sister Muriel Johnston. George was born on April 20, 1926 in East Kildonan and was the eldest child of Robert and Elsie Morrow. In 1956, he married Gwenyth Cearns. They were together for over 52 years until her death in 2009. He will always be remembered as a gentle soul, a man of few words and a generous and giving heart. In his school and young adult days, George was very involved in sports and outdoor activities. He ran track and field as a teenager, was an avid skier and was a long-time member of the Winnipeg Canoe Club. As an adult, he sang barbershop music with the Winnipeg chapter of the SPEBSQSA for over 60 years, enjoyed playing the harmonica, gardening and creating landscape oil paintings. In his work life, George was a darkroom technician for a photography shop, until he embarked on a career as a dental technician for Manitoba Dental Labs and Colbert Dental Lab, until his retirement in 1991. Following retirement, George stayed active. He took up wood carving with the Assiniboia Woodcarvers' Association, continued to sing with the SPEBSQSA and the Happy Homesteaders and played harmonica with Creative Retirement Manitoba's Philharmonica Band and the Zip Tones. Even when George's health would no longer allow him to participate in his groups, he continued to make music with his harmonica, including serenading hospital staff and patients with his playing in his last week of life. Music gave him such joy, and in return, George was able to give joy to so many others. George's family would like to thank Dr. Terry Babick, Dr. Carolina Araneda, and the nurses and unit aides of the Health Sciences Centre (GD5), for Dad's care over the years and the last two weeks of his life. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of George's life will take place at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg (204-949-2200) on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. George was an animal lover who counted his cats among his best friends.
