Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEAN DAVIES PECKOVER May 25, 1916 - February 1, 2016 On February 1, 2016 at the Carman Memorial Hospital, Jean Davies Peckover (nee Roberts), passed away at 99 years of age, surrounded by her family. Mom was born May 25, 1916 on the family farm at Homewood to Frank and Nellie Roberts (Hogg). She was the oldest of seven children Charles, Frankie, Kathleen Roy, Helen Penner, Wilfred and Nellie Downs. Part of being the oldest meant Mom had to help raise her six siblings and also work on the family farm. From a very young age she was accustomed to hardwork. She received her education at Garnett School and Norwood High School in Winnipeg. All seven of the Roberts children had military connections during the Second World War. The four girls married RCAF servicemen, Wilfred was in the Navy and Charles and Frankie were in the RCAF bomber command unit and were killed overseas. Mom met Dad, Lawrence at a community dance when she was 16 and they started dating. Dad joined the RCAF in 1939 and Mom went to work in Winnipeg for Swifts and Canada Packers. They were married on June 25, 1942. They bought a farm in the Brigdenley district where they raised five children. Dad contracted polio, became a parapalegic and was bound to a wheelchair. Mom took on all major responsibilities of the farm and continued to raise her family. This brought on many challenges. She never complained and did all that was necessary for her family. Mom was a farmer her entire life and kept an active and keen interest in the farm. She was always business minded and instead of retiring at the age of 64 she bought the Golden Star Motel and successfully ran it for 10 years. Mom was involved in her community. She joined the Boyne Bluebells 4-H Club, was a school trustee for the Brigdenley School District, president of the Carman Ladies Curling Club and a member of the Sperling Golden Corners group. She was also a member of the Sperling and Carman Legion Ladies Auxillary. Mom loved to travel and had a great group of friends that she travelled with all over the world. She visited places that included England, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and her favourite spot Barbados. In her later years, she enjoyed her gambling trips with her children. She kept up on current affairs and was very interested in politics. She was an avid reader, liked to bake and spent countless hours watching curling and golf. Mom had a witty and sharp sense of humour and had a practical and no-nonsense approach to life. Family meant everything to Mom and she instilled that in all of us. We all had daily visits and phone calls with Mom and she knew what was going on in all her grandchildren and great- grandchildren lives. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Sharon (Barry) Burke, Charles (Jane), Sharlene (Barry) Spencer, Don (Norma) and John (Faye) and her 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A special thanks to her friends and neighbours at the Legion Lodge. Also thanks to the wonderful nursing staff and doctors at Carman Hospital for your compassion and care during Mom's stay there. A private family service was held at Doyle's Funeral Home and interment took place at Sperling Cemetery. Donations can be made to Boyne Regional Library or Carman Palliative Care. Doyle's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements. www.doylesfuneralchapel.com

Lauraine's son David just sent me the obituary. You're mother was a second mother to me, all those years we went out to your farm. I'm sorry I lost touch. I hope all of you are well. E-mail me if you get this. Russ - Posted by: Russ Blood (Cousin) on: Feb 15, 2016
