ALBERT PAKAY After a lengthy and courageous battle with stomach cancer, Albert quietly passed away at the age of 61, at Riverview Health Centre on Wednesday, February 17, 2016. Besides his wife Verna, he is survived by his brothers and sisters and their families - George (Gisela), Daniel (Helga), Rose (Enrico) and Geraldine (Oscar). Nieces and nephews - Sacha Gielow, Melanie Fisher, Carl and Stacy Griffith and Giulio Capriotti. He was predeceased by his father Julius, mother Antoinette and his youngest sister Shirley-Ann Griffith. Albert was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1988, he decided to head North to Yellowknife, N.W.T. Albert was a capable and experienced crane operator and successfully established his business, Territorial Crane in Yellowknife for approximately 25 years. He met and married Verna in 1995 and together surrounded themselves with wonderful friends, good times and great memories of their life together in the North. Albert retired to Southern Alberta about four years ago. His dreams of retirement were cut short by his illness. Albert approached his battle with cancer with courage, grace and dignity. For the past five weeks, he has come back home to be with his family and friends here in Winnipeg. Despite his ill health, his wonderful cheerful disposition, sense of humour and quick wit shone through and made all of our visits with him wonderful memories to cherish and to remember. Albert's family would like to thank the many health care professionals who assisted him during his struggle with cancer, in particular the 5th Floor nursing staff at the Grace Hospital and the staff at 3E Palliative Care at Riverview Health Centre. A memorial service will take place on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • My condolences to the family Albert was such a funny and friendly guy - Posted by: janet tyler (friend) on: Apr 21, 2016

  • My deepest condolences to the Pakay family, the heart of Furby street. I was saddened to hear of the passing of one of my best friends growing up. To this day I share the story of the trip Albert and I took took to see the mountains out west. We were in our teens and our parents would not allow such a dangerous venture, unless good old Marty accompanied us. Albert and I ended up looking after him, and had some great stories to tell. I will always cherish the memory of my friend Adam. - Posted by: Gus Tsouras (Friend) on: Mar 03, 2016

  • Had the chance to meet Albert /verna and their friends while I lived in Yellowknife in the 1990's. He was a great guy and will be sadly missed by everyone who hand the chance to meet him, he was a good friend even though we hadn't talked in years. Sorry for your loss Verna. - Posted by: Kelly Armstrong (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2016

  • I'm so sorry for all your loss. News of Alberts' passing was a horrible blow. He was a great friend to myself, & anyone in need. I will always cherish the memories we created together during work time, & play time. No matter what the task, Albert tackled it with insight, grace, & an awe some sense of humor. A great man, & I will miss him sorely. - Posted by: Darren Gaskell () on: Feb 19, 2016

  • We met Albie and Verna when they became our neighbours about four years ago. We immediately connected with them and enjoyed more than one dinner with both their families and many friends. Pete and Albie enjoyed each other's equipment and had a lot of fun. Together they constructed a 5000 lb. 12 foot high Inukshuck held together by gravity. Every time we look at the Big Rock Man ... We see Albie. We both loved and admired him and are going to miss him dearly. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Pete and June Burrows (Friends) on: Feb 19, 2016

  • Today I remember an old friend, and all of the silly things we all got into. Dressing up for murder mysteries, playing too many games of "smurf" and laughing like crazy fools. Caribou Carnivals, Ugly Truck and Dog Contests, Black Tie Affairs, the strange allure af staying up all night to see a trailer or a house moved when the town slept. I remember that and more, and raise a glass to your memory "old friend". RIP. - Posted by: Janice York (Just an old friend...) on: Feb 19, 2016
