GENE HENRY ZAKALA October 17, 1926 - February 17, 2016 Peacefully, with family by his side, Gene Zakala passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Seven Oaks Hospital, at the age of 89 years. Remaining to cherish Gene's memory are his wife, Diane; daughter Cindy (Bob) Cameron; Diane's daughter, Susan (Garnet) Simo and son Robb Oades (Lori); as well as grandchildren, Kristjana (Chris) of Vancouver, BC, Jessie (Luke) of Squamish, BC, Finn, Malawi, Lach of Campbell River, BC; and great-grandson, Wesley. He is also survived by brother Ed and his family of Kelowna, BC. He was predeceased by his wife, Beverley (Einarson) and brother Bill. Gene grew up in the North End, Winnipeg, and attended St. Paul's High School. As a young man he was very involved in sports. He was the captain and quarterback of the St. Paul's Crusaders football team, pitcher for the Elmwood Giants and played defense for the Winnipeg Rangers. He also played one game with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Gene's career spanned 37 years at Air Canada (Trans-Canada Air Lines). He was a member of Rossmere Golf Club for 40 years and was proud of being Club Champion at locating lost balls. Later, he became an active member of the Seven Oaks Wellness Institute. Papa Zeke was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his grandchildren Kristjana and Jessie and took an active part in their lives. In compliance with Gene's wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Family and friends are welcome to attend a reception on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in Wojcik's Reception Centre, 1020 Main Street @ Manitoba Avenue. Sincere thanks to the staff of Maples Personal Care Home for their compassionate care and to Gene's companion, Becky. Special thanks to nurse Valerie and staff at the Seven Oaks Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2.
