Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMEKKIN LAUFEY IRELAND (nee GUDMUNDSON) July 21, 1945 - February 16, 2016 On Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at the Grace Hospital, Mekkin passed away peacefully at the age of 70. She was predeceased by her husband Charles; parents, Thorvaldur and Laufey Gudmundson; and brother Walter (Maria). She leaves behind her daughter Kristjana (Michael) and granddaughter Piper; and family, Patricia (Howard); Geoffrey (Phyllis); Richard (Robert); Claire (Mike, children, Abigail and Anders) and numerous special friends. Mekkin was born and raised in Winnipeg and spent time with family and friends in Lundar, MB. She graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, where she was very active in the music program and later studied at United College and the University of Manitoba. She was an avid reader and worked in many libraries, including the law library at Pitblado Law. She moved to Bristol, England in the late 1960s to work and later moved back to Winnipeg, where she married her husband, Charles Edward Ireland. Mekkin was very passionate about her interests and hobbies, which included music, literature, travel, cottage life and history - beagles and sweets being two of her favourite things. Mekkin and her family enjoyed travelling together and she was at her happiest when doing so. Many trips and memories were made all over Canada, Europe, Hawaii and the Caribbean. Mekkin was a feisty lady with a wicked sense of humour. She made a memorable impression on many lives and never failed to make a lifelong connection wherever she went. A very special thank you is expressed to all of the staff at Golden Door and Vital Life, where she lived in her later years. Your endless patience, understanding and kindness is greatly appreciated. Mekkin touched the lives of so many people in so many unique ways. A celebration of Mekkin's life will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 2:30 p.m., Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Mekkin was an avid reader and regularly utilized the many wonderful services of the Winnipeg Public Library; our family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: Winnipeg Public Library, Attn: Gifts and Donations, Administration Office, 251 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3P5. Many years ago Mekkin came to Llangollen Eisteddfod with a choir in which she sang. She and another young lady stayed with my mother in Chirk whilst competing. Fond memories - Posted by: Gaynor Sumner (Aquaintance) on: Jun 13, 2022
