HELEN MARGARET PICARD (NEE SKADSHEIM) September 9, 1942 - February 20, 2016 It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and friend Helen on February 20, 2016 at the age of 73, after a brief battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her three daughters Debbie (Glen), Susan (Steve), and Charlene. She will be missed by all of her grandchildren who adored her, Melissa, Darryl (Micheline), Kurtis, Emily, Calvin (Dan), Kenny (Karissa), Jennifer, Janelle, James, Jordan, Serenity and Isabelle. She will also be missed by her sister Elaine, numerous nieces and nephews and especially Linda who was like a daughter to her. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1996, her parents Martin and Annie Margaret (Turtle) Skadsheim, as well as her siblings Allen, Richard, Alice, Irene and Shirley as well as six siblings who died in infancy or early childhood. Helen was born in Winnipeg. When she was young she lived in numerous small towns outside of Winnipeg such as La Broqueire, Giroux, St. Anne and Steinbach and then she settled in Winnipeg. As a child she fought Polio and was told she would never walk, but being the fighter she was, she said "just watch me" and she was able to walk her entire life. Helen married the love of her life John in Sept. 1960 and was married to him until his sudden passing in 1996. Her passions were her family and her garden. Mom's family was her life. She loved her family with everything she had and was the most compassionate, loving, caring and giving person. There is not one person who could say a bad thing about her. She lived for her garden and she treated it with as much love and caring as her family. It was always beautiful and she shared the harvest from her garden with many family and friends. Donations may be made in her honour to Siloam Mission. The family would like to thank the staff at HSC and the nurses from the Palliative Care Unit for making mom comfortable in her last days. A special thank you to Nurse Naomi for staying with us during mom's final hours. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Pastor Harold Borchardt officiating. As per her wishes she has been cremated and a private family interment will take place in Brookside Cemetery. • My Grandmother was and will always be like a second mom to me. I am so proud of her strength and proud to say I knew her. She taught me what it means to care about people and showed me what it is to be selfless. I love you piglet, nothing I could do would amount to how much. I can see you reunited with the love of your life and running on your new legs for all of eternity. I will miss you grandma. We all love you ♡ - Posted by: Janelle Alarie (Grandaughter ) on: Feb 25, 2016
