MARY CURRELL VALENTINE
Born: May 06, 1931
Date of Passing: Feb 21, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY CURRELL VALENTINE (nee HAYES) May 6, 1931 - February 21, 2016 Peacefully, at the St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg. Devoted mother of John (Karen Belanger) of Metcalfe, Lesley Valentine-Anand (Raj) of Toronto, Guy (Elizabeth) of Ottawa and Michael (Liana) of Langley. Loving grandmother of Scott and Stephanie Valentine and Stefanie (Andres) and Alex Gagnon, Mark (Erin) and Michael (Kelly) MacPherson, Christopher and Timothy Valentine and Jaine Hillier. Great-grandmother of Ethan and Brayden MacPherson and Owen MacPherson. Daughter of the late Roland and the late Alinda Hayes, sister of the late Carol Greenbank, and Janet Birbara. Mary was an artist, mother, world traveler and raconteur, a treasured friend and mentor to people from all walks of life. She captured her experiences and insights on canvas and shared them with mastery, humour and grace. Her works are on display both in the formal dignity of galleries across Canada and in the close comfort of homes around the world. From the far North to Canada's Parliament Buildings, from the South Pacific to the Mediterranean, Mary's skill and passion captured the character and soul of the people and places she encountered. There are perhaps no better words than her own to sum up her life and her belief: "Everywhere has something; everyone has something." A celebration of Mary's life is planned for July 21, 2016 at St. Paul's College at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. We want to extend special thanks to the Hargraves family, and to the oncology team at CancerCare Manitoba and the nursing staff at the St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to support students in Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba. Gifts may be made online at: www.umanitoba.ca/giving or sent to the following address: Alumni and Donor Relations, 200-137 Innovation Drive, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB R3T 6B6. Cheques should be made payable to the University of Manitoba, with a memo directing the donation to "The Mary Valentine Memorial Bursary." NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Mary was a wonderful person who had a skill of making every one feel equally special. Her interest in all her former students was genuine and made us feel welcome and enveloped by her warmth. My work is with older adults and I admired greatly how she approached her later years. She aged wonderfully, maintaining grace and productivity despite physical setbacks. I think I have 5 paintings all together each very different in style and each one cherished. - Posted by: Kristel van Ineveld (student) on: Mar 08, 2016

Amazing neighbor and friend to Addie for 35+ years; side-splittingly funny tales (all true!) around the dinner table or on the back porch; Scrabble 'n scotch Friday nights; 'Fictionary' at the cottage; enduringly beautiful and evocative art. Mary was a gift. All of our family will miss and remember her with great affection. - Posted by: Kathy Penner & family (Friend) on: Feb 29, 2016

Mary's perennial optimism and sheer delight in humanity made her a wonderful artist and storyteller. Her heartfelt presence and warm chuckles will be dearly missed in our neighbourhood community. Your spirit is now free to fly, Mary. - Posted by: Helen Maupin (Neighbour & friend) on: Feb 29, 2016

Sunny afternoons and long lingering evenings sitting around the table laughing, story telling, and eating. Sharing a bottle or two of wine among friends while discussing serious topics and then on to something very frivolous but amusing...We will miss your wonderful company and are grateful to have spent joyful times together. Mary, you will live on in our memories and through your painting. Thank you for everything. What a mensch! - Posted by: Ian and Cornelia Marcil (Friends) on: Feb 27, 2016

We love this picture of your Mom - it sums up her spirit of adventure. As we have several "Valentines" adorning our walls, Mary once said "When I am dead - you will be rich." Just having Mary in our lives all these years made us rich. We had many a laugh over a glass of wine (some while getting her taxes done!). She will be missed and always fondly remembered.
