GWYN WILLIAMS JONES January 8, 1947 - March 12, 2016 It is with profound sadness that after a short but courageous battle with cancer, we announce the passing of Gwyn Williams Jones at home with his wife by his side on Saturday, March 12. Gwyn was predeceased by his parents Towyn and Mary (nee Yarmiy). He leaves to mourn his wife and soulmate of 42 years, Patricia; children Bronwyn (Jeremy), Selwyn (Denise), and Meghan (Jon-Paul); grandchildren Alexandra, Emma, Tristyn, Sophie, Aidan, Annabelle and Owyn; and his faithful companion Duke. Gwyn was born in Brandon on January 8, 1947. He was an only child. He had to commute by train, to attend the Saskatchewan School for the Deaf and spent months at a time away from his family, which was difficult on him and his parents. Despite the hardships being away from home, he made many lifelong friends and had many fond memories. He graduated in 1964 and went on to attend the Manitoba Institute of Technology where he obtained his barber licence. Gwyn worked as a Journeyman Barber for five years and then was happily employed with the Manitoba Government, first as a Maintenance Supervisor, then as a Residence Supervisor at the Manitoba School for the Deaf. He remained with the Manitoba Government for 33 years and retired in 2003. Gwyn always had a love of sports. He especially enjoyed hockey and baseball and had an uncanny knack for quoting sports statistics. He loved watching his children and grandchildren play hockey and ringette and took pride in coaching his daughter's ringette team. He was elated to be inducted into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame in 2009 for his incredible pitching talent. In 1985, he decided to leave the city life behind and moved his family to Beausejour. There he enjoyed spending time with his family playing ball, star gazing, watching wildlife and exploring all 80 acres of the property. He took great pride in building the family cottage with his wife, children and close friends and looked forward to spending time with them all at "the lake". Some of our best memories of Dad are from time spent out at the cottage fishing, hiking, boating, swimming and dreaming. Gwyn will always be remembered for his love of animals, his sense of humour and his generous heart. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sidhu; Dr. Myers and staff of the Health Sciences Centre Respiratory Clinic; Dr. Banerji and staff of CancerCare Manitoba; Dr. Alewan; Dan Aitken, Jo Dohler, and Ryan Goleski of the W.P.F.S.; as well as to family and friends for their continued love and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Kakepitay, 285 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2E1; the Winnipeg Humane Society or CancerCare Manitoba. A Celebration of Life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. on Saturday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.
