SUSAN STEINWANDT (SUSAN WHITE) Susan passed away peacefully on March 18, 2016 just shortly after marking her 92nd birthday and three days after her 25th wedding anniversary to her second husband, Herb Steinwandt. Susan Pathenia Hannah Crossley was born in a farmhouse in Niverville, Manitoba in 1924. The family soon relocated to a new family farm in Moosomin, Saskatchewan. Times were not good in the 1930s and Mom always said they likely would have perished if not for the hunting and trapping abilities of her two older bothers, Fred and Frank. Her best friend on the farm was her brother Harry. Like many other women, she worked while the war went on in the 1940s. Susan and her first husband, James White, married in 1944, were partners in the 1950s in the family trucking business, White Freighters, where she worked the office and he ran the trucks. Together, they raised three children, Olive (Cyril), Hal, and Dale (Debbi). Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren followed over the years. After selling the business they moved from Moosomin to Prince Albert to Saskatoon and then finally to Winnipeg where she pursued her own work career with Glassman Dept. store in Westwood, Briggs and Maxwell Pharmacy in the Assiniboia Clinic and then spent many years as receptionist to the late Dr. Garth Mosher, also at Assiniboia Clinic until her retirement. She had lost her first husband, James White in 1978 but continued to work, golf, and travel extensively with friends and family. In 1993, She remarried and she, along with her second husband, Herb Steinwandt, enjoyed retirement to the fullest by golfing, travelling, dancing and socializing with the many friends they had and the many they met at social outings, while travelling and wintering in Arizona. They enjoyed their home on Wallasey Street and later, their new condo on Chalfont Road. Mom always took great pride in her appearance and demeanor and was a regular customer to get a perm or her hair done "just right." or aquiring a new outfit, usually bought "across the line", for the next dance or for church. In 2007, she entered West Park Manor Personal Care Home, then was discharged for almost a year due to improved health and returning again to start the final stage of her life. She lived out the remaining years in the grip of steadily advancing Alzheimer's. She was the last of her generation to pass and was predeceased by her three brothers, Fred, Frank and Dr. Harry Crossley and as well as her sisters-in-law in a very closely knit family. We thank Herb for the joy he brought to Mom in retirement and for the support and care he took to improve her quality of life while in care and the family also thanks the staff of West Park for their care and service to our mother in her final years. Nine years is a long time to be a resident in a personal care home and that is a testament to the care that she received from many. Mom enjoyed a long and full life and now can rest. The family has a saying to sum up a rich and full life "Life's work, done well." A celebration of Susan's life will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Interment to follow. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Paul & I would like to send our deepest sympathy to all of Susan's family, Uncle Herb and cousin Cheryl. My sister Betty in Kelowna happened to come across the obituary quite by accident today and she let us know. When my Mom (Uncle Herb's sister Julie), was alive she absolutely loved visiting Sue. I'm not sure what created the amazing bond between Mom and Sue, but I can honestly say I don't remember Mom ever talking as fondly about any other relative or friend as she did about Sue. Mom seemed to have found a soul mate and for that I would like to thank Sue's family and Uncle Herb for bringing Sue into our lives. I live in Australia and consequently I only had the pleasure of meeting Sue on a couple of occasions, but listening to Mom talk about her I feel like I knew her and also felt very close to her. I was very saddened to hear that she suffered with that terrible disease. My husband's Mom who is 94 now is also dealing with the disease. From what I heard over the years, Uncle Herb and Sue had a lovely marriage and had many joyous times which makes me and my sisters, Bonnie and Betty, very happy. We will remember Sue with great fondness and love. Our sincere condolences, Paul & Marie xxx - Posted by: Marie and Paul Roach (Daughter to Herb's Sister Julia) on: Mar 29, 2016
