CYNTHIA DRAPER (nee RUSSELL) It is with sadness to announce the passing of Cynthia Draper of OakBank on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the age of 81 years. Cynthia is survived by her children Matthew Reimer, Linda "Fera" Reimer, Laura (Randy) Zacharias, sisters-in-law Beth (Bob) McLeod, Doreen Draper, Lois Reimer, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon and sister Patricia Damur. Cynthia believed what mattered most was spreading love out into the world. She was happiest when spending time with her children. She was born in Edmonton, lived in London, England with her first husband, Norman, for three years before moving to Charleswood. There she brought up her family. She married Gordon in 1982 and moved to OakBank. She worked at the University of Manitoba for many years, and upon leaving there, enjoyed retirement, never stagnating but always active and artistic. She spent summer days on the golf course, got her pilot's license, and tutored for years with the Transcona Literacy Centre. She expressed her love for gardening by landscaping seven acres into a panoply of colour, fragrance, and texture, transforming her yard with vegetables, flowers, shrubs, and trees. With Gordon she travelled many places, including a motorcycle trip to New Zealand returning with delightful and hair-raising stories of their adventures. They wintered in Mesa, and even explored the East coast. She turned her energetic spirit towards painting, experimenting with a variety of mediums to great success. An accomplished violinist in her youth, she returned to music in later years, picked up the guitar and enjoyed accompanying her son Matthew on his banjo. Staying true to her course, she planted many good memories in our hearts. A celebration of Cynthia's life will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at OakBank United Church 582 Balsam Crescent in OakBank. seasonsfunerals.ca

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I met Cynthia when she came to volunteer at our Literacy organization. She worked with my husband at the UOM for years and upon her retirement, he suggested she volunteer in our program. I remember Cynthia as a bright light, generous of spirit and full of love and compassion. She volunteered with several students for many years and helped them improve their lives. I appreciate the time she shared volunteering with us and am thankful that I got to know her. - Posted by: Karen (Friend ) on: Sep 18, 2019

  • I was so sorry to learn of Cynthia's death I remember the fun times we had together in Charleswood with the family gatherings of Sparlings, Johnsons and Andersons --the books we shared, the feasts we enjoyed, the bad bridge , and most of all the laughter as we raised our children together through the years of preschool, muddy roads & waterfilled ditches. We cared for each other's kids through a co-op nursery & we solved the world's problems at Y Neighbours where we lobbied successfully for a Public Library for Charleswood. Many happy memories---of a dear friend who will be missed though it is some time since we have connected. I am so very sorry I did not know until today that she had died. My very best wishes to you Matthew, Linda and Laura. Your Mother was one special person very sincerely Barb Sparling - Posted by: Barbara Sparling (friend) on: Mar 28, 2016
