JAMES THEODORE ALMDAL November 11, 1926 - March 20, 2016 The family of Jim Almdal wishes to announce his peaceful passing on March 20, 2014 at 89 years of age with family at his side. He will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by Joyce; his wife of 69 years and their three children, Judy Kaprowy, Ron (Colleen), and Wendy Down; his grandchildren Kerri Guralnick (Jason), Geoffrey Kaprowy, Sayer, Aquila Down and Crystal Almdal; and great-grandchildren Joshua and Seth Guralnick; as well as his three brothers Neil (Shirley), John, and William (Rose); sister-in-law Joan; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents Theodore and Ivy Almdal; niece Heather; sister-in-law Dorothy; his brother Larry; and son-in-law Richard Kaprowy. Jim proudly served as a career soldier in the Canadian Military. He began his military career with the militia and then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces in 1945. Jim was a veteran of the Korean War and saw action as a Canadian Peace Keeper in Korea. After retirement he worked another 12 years for Alpine Drywall. While stationed in Calgary, Alberta he met, fell madly in love with and married Joyce Westlake. Together they raised their three children and travelled throughout the world, visiting war memorials, cathedrals and castles, exploring cities and country sides, and meeting relatives in Denmark. Every weekend and holiday was filled with fun and adventure. Once fully retiring Jim and Joyce became Snowbirds. Winters in Arizona and summers with their family at the cottage Jim built in Beaconia. Jim cared passionately for his wife Joyce, for his three children, his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. His family will always hold dear the many happy times spent at the cottage, Sunday morning breakfasts, the camping and road trips, and the fishing adventures that he took them on. He loved his four brothers and could hardly wait for their phone calls to discuss the latest sporting or news event. He was a loyal and trusting friend. He will be missed but long remembered. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. The family would like to thank the second floor staff of Concordia Hospital for their care, kindness and compassion during his stay with them. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 0R3. "They whom we love and lose are no longer where they were before.
