ELIZABETH MAE (BETTY) CUSHMAN Betty Cushman passed away peacefully on March 25, 2016. Predeceased by her husband Jim (2008), her son-in-law Ernie Mutimer (2014), and her sister Jean Mitchell (2015), she leaves to cherish warm memories her daughters Ann Mutimer and Judith Kearns (Brian Turner); her grandchildren Caitlin Kowall (Aaron; Matthew and Bronwyn), Travis Kearns (Alison Warrian; Andrew and Owen), Aidan Topping (Donovan Hulse), and Tyler Kearns (Katherine; Mila and Oliver); her sister Evelyn Fisher; her nieces and nephews and their families. Mom was born in Windsor on August 15, 1924, the second of three sisters who remained the closest of friends. Working for Bell Telephone as a customer service representative after graduation, she was described as having "a voice with a smile". Mom met Dad at an Air Force dance, and they married on Dad's birthday in 1945, beginning more than 60 happy years together. They moved first to Niagara Falls, where their two daughters were born, and, in 1955, to Winnipeg. The four of us travelled back East every summer, and in later years Mom and Dad ventured further afield, with several memorable trips to Mexico, Myrtle Beach, Texas, and Berkeley. Family was the center of Mom's life. She was unfailingly supportive of her daughters, for which we will be forever grateful. Her support was steadfast as her family grew: she passed along the secrets of her apple pie and butter tarts to her granddaughters, cheered on her hockey-playing grandsons, and delighted in the company of her great-grandchildren. Mom looked forward to holiday celebrations and, in recent years, weekly lunches at Assiniboine Park. She also had a gift for friendship and a strong faith. A founding member of the congregation of St. Bede's, she was Church secretary for several years and belonged to the ACW, the Altar Guild, and the WA. A celebration of thanksgiving for Mom's life will take place at the Church of St. Stephen and St. Bede, 99 Turner Avenue, on Thursday, April 7, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held in the Parish Hall after the service. The family would particularly like to thank Mom's friend Donna McLean, who took her to St. Bede's each Sunday. We would also like to express our appreciation to those at Sturgeon Creek 2 and Home Care who helped Mom live independently during her final years, and the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital and Misericordia Interim Care, whose compassionate care in Mum's final weeks was greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Betty and I shared a bedroom and a bed from the night I gave up my cot. We liked to snuggle and keep each other warm in our rather cool room. When the Lindberg baby was kidnapped Betty tied our arms together so she would know if anyone tried to take me..No one did! She was quite confident that she could save me. I followed in her footsteps and became a service rep - good but not exceptional like her so eventually I went back to school so I could do something else. I taught at Pitt which I enjoyed more. - Posted by: Evelyn Fisher (Sister) on: Apr 10, 2016
