LOIS COLLEEN BEDNAREK (nee ZAHORODNY) Lois Colleen Bednarek passed away peacefully on April 1, 2016 at the Lakeshore General Hospital, with her loving husband by her side, after a courageous three year battle with cancer. Lois was born in Winnipeg to John and Verma Zahorodny (nee Eyjolfsson) on October 14, 1956. She grew up on the family cattle ranch at the north end of Portage Bay on Lake Manitoba. She was passionate about her horses and loved spending time with her loving siblings and cousins who loved to visit in the summer. Lois was home schooled for Grade 1, then she boarded out to finish the remainder of her schooling. She then took an accounting course at Red River College. After completing her course, she worked for CancerCare in Winnipeg and Domtar Packaging until she met her future husband, Marvin, and moved out to Steep Rock to once again live beside the lake. Lois and Marvin married on December 19, 1987 in Steep Rock, Manitoba. Lois continued to work at Graymont until her precious son, Kevin, was born who she stayed home with until he went to school. Once Kevin was in school, she worked at the Ashern Auction Mart where she made many new friends. She also worked for Bergner Auction Services. Lois had a passion for taking pictures, gardening, and writing cards and letters. If you couldn't find her doing these things you could surely find her out in the pasture with the newly acquired llama herd including her favourite llama, Sweetie, who would always follow her around. In her final year, she enjoyed cruising around the lake on their house boat, "Palm Breeze" with all her family and friends including her new found El Salvadorian friends. Lois was predeceased by father John, and brother Larrie. She is survived by husband Marvin of Steep Rock, son Kevin of Brandon, mother Verma of Lundar, sister Linda Roehl of Ashern and children, Larissa of Saint John, New Brunswick, Kristopher and partner Courtney and her daughter Layla of Ashern, sister Sharon (Larry) Krakowka of Portage la Prairie and daughter Ashley (Jason) Barrett of Calgary, along with her sister-in-law Ruth Zahorodny of Dauphin. Lois will also be remembered by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. The family would like to thank Dr. Rauch and Dr. Matheson of Dauphin, Dr. Daliwal of CancerCare, Dr. Amadi and all the nurses and staff at Lakeshore General Hospital for all the support and care. A special thank you to Debbie Tindall who brightened Lois' day. Also to Vera Appleyard who was there to support Lois and our family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lois' name to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc., 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to the Lakeshore Hospital Guild, c/o Julie Bergner, PO Box 721, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0. As per Lois' wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held with an interment at the Clarkleigh Cemetery in their family plot.
