ALFRED CHARLES SELVER 1928 - 2016 Sadly and unexpectedly on the morning of April 5 2016, Alfred Charles Selver passed away. Celebrating his memory are his three sons, Robert, Donald (Lesli), Scott (Sharmaine) and grandchildren Dana Tessler (Jack Keays), Alix Tessler, Max Selver and Sebastian Selver. Predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Frances in 2011, brother Jack, sisters Pearlie, Ruthie, and parents Sidney and Liba. Alfred was born November 4, 1928, the youngest of four children. Life was hard after the passing of his father Sidney in 1934. Graduating from St. Johns High School, Alfred put himself through university while helping to support their mother and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1956 with degrees in Arts and Education. He pursued a career in education spending most of his teaching time at Argyle, Aberdeen and R.B. Russell schools before retiring in 1987. Alf and Frances met at teacher's college, married and together shared many common interests and hobbies such as playing bridge, the symphony and other social events. They raised their three sons in a loving home that always included dogs - enjoying the company of many sizes and breeds throughout the years. After Frances' passing, Alf embraced the care and company of the last family pet Beau - a beautiful black standard poodle who was a spirited and lively companion. Alfred enjoyed a lifelong love of woodworking, creating a variety of projects that will continue to be family heirlooms. His other passions included curling, 5 pin bowling, boating on Lake of the Woods and enjoying bird and wildlife watching at the family cottage in Kenora. His main passion though was food and he loved experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes. When his health declined, going out for lunch or supper was the adventure he craved. He was happiest when he could venture out to his favourite restaurants and treat family members to a meal. We will miss those family focused gatherings and his dynamic presence. A celebration of Alfred's life will take place on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson "In The Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Viewing will precede the service at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alf's memory to The Winnipeg Foundation at 204-944-9474.
