THOMAS NELSON HOWARD
Born: Jun 07, 1943
Date of Passing: Apr 08, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHOMAS NELSON HOWARD Tom passed away peacefully on Friday April 8, 2016, with family by his side. He was born on June 7, 1943 to Norman and Alice Howard (Nelson) in Winnipeg. Tom is survived by his wife Frances; brother Richard; daughters, Heather (John), Kathleen (David), Jessica (Dietrich); by grandchildren, William and Gwendolyn (Heather), Alice and Miranda (Kathleen), and Tessa and Kimber (Jessica); and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Tom grew up in the West End, earning first his Certificate at the Manitoba Teachers' College and then his Bachelor of Education at the University of Winnipeg. He went on to teach in the Winnipeg School Division from 1970 to 1998, including a time at General Wolfe where both he and his brother had been students. Tom began his career teaching art and while later he moved to other subjects, he continued to be creative at home where he was always planning his next project. No subject was off limits as he explored woodworking, textiles, paint and ceramics. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of creativity, both in finished art pieces and project materials. Tom loved to tell stories. Whatever the subject or circumstances, Tom always had an opinion or anecdote. Tom's greatest passion was his family. He encouraged his children to pursue their dreams and reach whatever goals they chose. His favourite thing to do was to make the children laugh. It was well known that if you wore a polka dot dress, an attempt would be made to count the dots (to the wearer's great delight). A celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, followed by a graveside service at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to an animal shelter of your choice.

I remember Tom from my early years of student teaching at General Wolfe School. He was a friendly, colourful "larger than life" man, full of humour, intellectual wit and passion for art and education. Upon his retirement, our paths continued to cross at various art shows and gatherings and I was always enjoyed his company and his perspective on life "after retirement". My condolences go out to the Howard family. Tom's memory is cherished by many. I will always remember growing up with Tom. Our families were very close when we were children. Our fathers looked so much alike that from behind you were not sure who was who. om and I had a close relationship when we were young as we both had illness that could not be determined so had a bond of what do you think is wrong with us. My family wish you and yours our condolences - Posted by: Marilyn Parker (Cousin) on: Apr 17, 2016

I always remember teasing both Tom and Richard growing up in Winnipeg. Our families used to get together quite often. Then we all grew up and drifted apart. As I got older, my thoughts returned to Winnipeg and family on many occasions, but nothing was done about them over the years. Good memories! - Posted by: Dave Howard (Cousin) on: Apr 16, 2016
