JOHN GILLGAN HAYDEN May 30, 1949 - April 9, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John Hayden, on Saturday, April 9, 2016. John was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Daisy and his sister, Doreen McTavish. His memory will be cherished by his wife Karen, his son Sean and his daughter Heather, brother-in-law Bernie McTavish and nephew Gerald McTavish (Cassandra). He will be sadly missed by his two grandchildren - Noah and Paige. John was employed in the natural gas industry for 41 years and was heavily involved in the CEP Union, serving as president of his Local until his retirement from Manitoba Hydro in 2010. During his retirement he became a true grandpa, looking after his two grandchildren. Taking them for swimming lessons, going to baseball games, participating in Nerf gun fights or playing tag, whatever Noah and Paige asked of him, he would fully engage in. John enjoyed travelling. His greatest adventure was getting to see Ireland. He made sure everyone knew that he was Irish and proud of it. He also enjoyed vacationing with family and friends. He loved swimming and every vacation had to include a pool; he swam every day and loved playing in the water with his grandchildren. John was an animal lover. He spent many hours walking his dogs in the Assiniboine Forest and the Charleswood dog park. He was a dog magnet, always carrying treats in his pockets to share with his four legged friends. A Celebration of John's life will take place on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 0R3. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. My condolences to Karen & Family. I spent my teenage years living next to John & Karen in Charleswood. I really appreciated having them next door. The last time I saw them was in 1984 at my wedding. I always thought it was nice to know that some of the people we used to know were still living on our old street. I only happened to find out about John's passing when my Dad, Colin, contacted another former neighbour to let them know that my Mom had passed away on April 13th, 2016,just a few days after John. Her obituary was just posted this weekend. - Posted by: Kevin Ferris (Former Neighbour) on: Apr 24, 2016

John and I were childhood friends and although half a century has passed since those carefree days I still have many vivid memories of the adventures we shared together - riding our bikes together, going fishing at Lockport, just sitting around talking, planning what to do for two whole glorious months of summer holidays. Even as a kid I remember how John was a truly kind and caring person. I smile to think of those days now so long ago. Thank you John for being my friend. - Posted by: James Murray (Childhood friend) on: Apr 18, 2016

I didn't know John personally, but we often bumped in to each other at the Charleswood Dog Park. No matter what the weather, John always seemed to be there. He would pet every dog he could, and offer treats to all the dogs, (with their owners permission, of course). The "Bark Park" won't be the same without him. John and I worked on several negotiations at the company and I can attest to the fact he was a person who cared for the right thing and always treated people with fairness and kindness. He was a leader and a great man. How often spoke of his family with tremendous pride. Following John's retirement he was asked to sit on a union committee and agreed without hesitation again proof of a caring and generous man. The theme of John's Irish roots kept him believing that the colour green must appear on every Union contract and it always was there at each printing. He Had help so many people during tough times in the work place, and I was proud to have known him! I am sure heaven is as green as John would want. Good -bye old friend, My condolences to John's family. He will live in your memories forever! Wayne S - Posted by: Wayne S (Union brother and coworker) on: Apr 16, 2016

John was a wonderful person to everyone and a really fun uncle to be around. He was very welcoming with open arms and made everyone feel comfortable to be around him. I remember going mini golfing with him and some relatives one summer and he would tell me that I won when I had lost the game. He also had shown me not to be afraid of his dogs whenever I came over and to try petting them. I really enjoyed his stories of his Irish culture, cheering on the Yankees, Boston Bruins and the Blue Bombers; and the trips that he had been on. He was a loving and easy going person to talk to; he was open to hugs and a "How you doing there kiddo?" every time I saw him at family gatherings. He will be sadly and deeply missed.
