BART HAK Bart Hak was born on February 17, 1923 in Leusden, Netherlands (Holland) and passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 93. Bart is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary, his children John (Frances), Peter (Dixie), Lidia, Martin (Gail), Albert, and Andrew (Lisa); grandchildren Nicholas (Kristie), Jessica, Brendon (Kira), Michelle (Dilver), Amanda, Benjamin, David, Christopher, Stephen, Jeffrey, Kelsey, Nathaniel and Meagen; sister Greet Bokkers; brothers-in-law Piet Van't Klooster and Joop Vermoolen; sister-in-law Marie Hak and Riek Van Hofslot; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Netherlands. Bart was predeceased by his son William; grandsons Aaron and Matthew; parents Johannes and Aleida; his brothers Jan, Gareth, and Joop; his sisters Bertha, Marie, Greet, and Alie. Bart was born on and raised on the family farm in Holland. At 31 years of age, he married his wife Mary, also from Holland, on February 24, 1954. Three weeks later, the newlyweds boarded a ship and immigrated to Canada in hopes of starting their own family farm. Together they faced many challenges in a new country including a new language. He worked for a market gardener in St. Germain for 10 years, all the while saving money to one day buy a farm. And they did all of this while raising a family of seven children. His dream came true in 1964 when they bought a dairy farm just outside of St. Pierre, Manitoba. Farming was his lifelong passion, and his hard work and dedication was evidenced by many awards that he won with the family dairy business. While there was never a shortage of work to do, time was always found to attend church every Sunday morning followed by Sunday afternoon off. Free time was spent with family soccer or hockey games, time at the beach, a Sunday drive in the countryside, or with his other passion, horses. Bart and Mary sold the farm in 1986 and retired to St. Vital where time was filled with curling, golfing, gardening, bowling, playing cards, and most importantly, their grandchildren! It was always a highlight for the grandkids to go over to Oma and Opa's house. Bart and Mary could always be found at an event involving their grandchildren, from sports to arts, and church events to graduations. A celebration of Bart's life will be held at Mary Mother of the Church on 85 Kirkbridge Drive in Fort Richmond, Winnipeg on April 21, at 11:00 a.m. Bart and Mary supported numerous charities. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice. The family sincerely thanks the wonderful staff at the Victoria General Hospital for the care given to our Mom (Oma) and Dad (Opa). Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Dear Peter, Dixie, Martin and Gail. So sorry for your double loss; it's hard to part with our parents - but it sounds like you had great relationships - it sure carries us through (we both lost our moms in quick succession). My Dad played billiards with yours at Seine River and is going to attend the services. Our prayers are with you and your kids, Rick and Laura Reimer, Southdale. - Posted by: Laura Reimer (Neighbour) on: Apr 18, 2016

  • Una bella historia de Amor. Solo le pido a Dios que los tenga en su gloria y a la familia la suficiente fuerza para poder afrontar este díficil momento. No muere el que vive en el corazón y los recuerdos de sus seres queridos. HASTA SIEMPRE BART Y MARY - Posted by: Dilver (Husband Michelle) on: Apr 16, 2016

  • “Mary was the sweetest person you could ever come across” rings true in our memories of “Oma Bart” and “Tanta Mies”. The eight of us Nieuwenburg children share the same history with the seven Hak children, with Mom born in Leusden, Holland (the same town as Oma Bart) and Dad from nearby Hoogland (not far from Soest where Tanta Mies was born), marrying and immigrating a week later to Canada in 1953, and then years in St. Germain, and afterwards many visits with all the kids travelling in the station wagon to the farm in St. Pierre to play in the haystacks and “help” with the cows. We have fond memories and affection for the Hak family and give our condolences. - Posted by: Nieuwenburgs (friends) on: Apr 16, 2016
