ARTHUR AUGUST DUFRESNE August 9, 1927 April 20, 2016 With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend at the Grace Hospital at the age of 88. Left to cherish his memory are his sons Dean (Tracy) and Craig (Heather); grandsons Spencer and Matthew; sisters Claire Patry and Helen Dufresne; brother Edmond Dufresne; special neighbours Audrey and Bill Brechka; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Art was predeceased by his beloved wife Mabel; sister Jeanette (Leo) Gauvin; brothers Chuck Dufresne and George (Marj) Dufresne; sisters-in-law Cheryl Legault and Genieve (Ralph) Morrow. Art was born on the family farm in Elie, Manitoba, to Alexandre and Alice Dufresne and never tired of telling stories of the struggles and pleasures of being raised in the country with a large loving family. He taught school in Northern Manitoba and loved to teach geography. Once he married Mabel Swenson he settled in to work at Coldstream Products where he enjoyed a long career as Personnel Manager retiring at age 65. Dad would tell you that he lost his wife far too soon and that she was the love of his life. They enjoyed raising their boys together and traveling with family and friends. Camping was a favourite pastime and upon retirement he purchased a motor home and created many happy memories with us. He had a love of nature and was always happy to feed the birds, squirrels and any other animal that made its way through his yard. He was an exceptional gardener who started his seeds inside in early spring and spent the summer nurturing his plants and he took great pleasure when he could send you home in the fall with a bag overflowing with vegetables. The family would like to thank staff at the Grace Hospital for their care and guidance. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, April 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. • Dear Craig , Dean and your families. Glen and I send our sincere condolences to all of you at this difficult time. To this day, I have fond and wonderful memories of spending time with Art and Mabel - many sleepovers and camping trips while the boys were away, to name a few. • I was shocked and saddened to hear that Uncle Art passed away. A long time ago I took Uncle Art and Auntie Mabel to Disneyland. They truly enjoyed each other’s company. I am sure Uncle Art is thrilled to be with the love of his life Mabel. I am sorry I was unable to make the service. My deepest regrets and sincerest sympathy – Theresa Dufresne - Posted by: Theresa Dufresne (niece) on: Apr 27, 2016

  • To Art’s family and friends, I am very sorry to hear of Art’s passing. My husband Bill and I lived on Parkhill St., across from Art. He was a good friend and neighbour, and will be greatly missed. He took great pride in his garden, and always shared his harvest with the neighbourhood. My husband always enjoyed their backyard chats in the summer. When my husband passed away in 2009 he was a great support for me during that time in my life. My prayers are with you all at this time. • We are truly saddened about our best friend and neighbor, Art. He was the best neighbor anyone could ever ask for and more. I keep wanting to come home and see Art sleeping in his bench rocker that he sat on every evening to doze off after a long day of gardening, tinkering around trying to fix things, putting things back together, offering his helping hand to everyone around, catching mice, feeding the crows and trying to catch his friendly neighborhood rabbit(s)!! I am truly going to miss my life with Art and all of his stories about his love of his life, Mabel, and his life long experiences. Life will not be the same without Art. Art thought of Breanne as his Daughter he never had, we will miss you our friend. Our condolences to Dean, Tracy, Matthew, Craig, Heather, and Spencer, and the rest of his family. Art, you will never be forgotten!! xoxoxox - Posted by: Stacie Hay & Breanne Timlick (long time neighbors) on: Apr 25, 2016

  • I am very saddened to hear of Arts passing. He was an extremely generous man, always offering his help or extras from his garden. Many times I would come home from work to find out Art had repaired something he saw needed fixing without being asked. He loved to share stories and he and I would often share some laughs on the from street. He was well known in the neighbour had everyone always had very kind words for and about Art. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to say goodbye! Art made an everlasting impression in my and my sons lives and we miss him. Rest in Peace my friend. - Posted by: John Lemire (Neighbour) on: Apr 24, 2016
