EVA BONKOWSKI Eva passed away peacefully on April 13, 2016, at the Arborg Personal Care Home, at the age of 96. Born in Ledwyn, Manitoba, she was a committed and dedicated school teacher; an advocate with a caring heart to many children. Eva began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Carlowrie, Manitoba, then at Happy Thought School, East Selkirk, Manitoba, and then in Roseisle, Manitoba. She taught at several elementary schools in Winnipeg, retiring in 1981 from Kent Road School. Although she enjoyed her teaching career, Eva equally embraced retirement and lifelong learning opportunities. Eva will be fondly remembered as a loving and caring sister, aunt, and friend, with a strong, courageous and independent spirit. She was both a godmother and a "fairy godmother" to many. Eva is survived by her two sisters, Anne and Mary, sister-in-law Jackie, nieces Joanne Sarakula (Michael), Andrea Parrish and Elizabeth Hrycak (Travis), nephew Greg Hrycak (Tania Ruday) and their families. She was predeceased by her brother, Peter, and brother-in-law, George. Our family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to her many caregivers at the Arborg Personal Care Home and sister-in-law Jackie for her compassionate care. Cremation has taken place. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Eva's memory to the Arborg Personal Care Home, Arborg, MB, R0C 0A0. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I grew up in Ledwyn and she & Anne retired in Ledwyn area just a couple miles from us. Every Halloween, every school fundraiser, every odd job squad thing, we would be sure to stop by the Bonkowski ladies. One day in particular, we were selling tickets- $2 per ticket/ $10 for the book of tickets and the winner would receive two hours of work around the house done by the one selling the tickets. Well, dear Eva bought an entire book of tickets and said "I shan't take advantage, I would just like to support." And that was Eva in a nutshell. - Posted by: Christine Sutyla (Friend of the family ) on: Aug 18, 2023

  • I loved Miss Bonkowski. She taught at Clifton School and although never one of my teachers, she always had a hug and a kind word. You always felt safe with her. Such a great heart. To this day, when I think of her, I smile. - Posted by: sheila babineau (student) on: Apr 25, 2016

  • A great teacher. She was patient, compassionate and always willing to help you. - Posted by: Tom Napady (Student) on: Apr 25, 2016

  • She was my grade 6 teacher at Kent Road School over 50 years ago. She is one of those teachers who just stand out when remembering early school years. I can still picture her - she had such an engaging smile, and she loved her students. - Posted by: Donna Friesen (Lee) (past student) on: Apr 23, 2016

  • I am sad to hear of her passing. When we first immigrated to Canada in 1955 she was my fifth grade teacher at Weston school and I have never forgotten her for her patience and kindness and she wore the most wonderful perfume, and when I happen to come upon someone who wears it I am always reminded of her tho I never found out what it was. There are teachers one remembers all their lives and she is one of them. My condolences. - Posted by: Connie van Loon (student) on: Apr 23, 2016
